Yesterday an old friend, not a Sanghi at all, but the usual anti-Congress liberal, said:

"Rahul Gandhi has not proven himself in governance."

And it was that typical thing. He voted for Modi exactly once, in 2014. For whatever reason, he did. And I'm not even one of those people who holds it against him.

But yesterday it kinda triggered me. So I asked: did Modi prove his governance in 2014?

Of course not. There was no national record to judge yet. So it must have been 2002, when he'd already proven his brilliant governance to you. That must be why you voted for him in 2014.

A fantastic administrator he must have been, to let Gujarat burn for weeks, even months.

Unofficially, more than 2,000 people were killed, mostly Muslims. Around two lakh were displaced, mostly Muslims.

And because he is well read, I had to bring up a scholar we've discussed before.

Steven Wilkinson has argued that large-scale communal violence is rarely a random eruption. State governments intervene decisively when it's in their electoral interest to protect the vulnerable, and they hold back when it isn't.

In Modi's case it ran the other way: it was profitable for him to let the riot run. The bodies from the Godhra train were even brought to Ahmedabad and put before the public in a way that could only pour fuel on the fire. That much is documented.

Was that the perfect example of governance you were looking for?

We were there. We saw it play out in real time. The whole world was in utter shock, not just India, the whole world. We were both in our twenties, and we know, because we saw what was happening.

You were at MS University, Baroda, in 2002. I still remember a phone call from you. You said: "Humanity is dead in India, after the things I have seen and heard."

And yet, just twelve years later, you voted for Modi. Because, as you told me, you didn't vote for Modi. You voted to save India from Congress.

So what was the governance you voted for, then? The Gujarat Model?

Where he rewards his bigoted base, disciplines the institutions, treats dissent as sedition, and lets the temperature of hate rise because that is the only way he knows how to rule?

The man who carries allegations of surveilling a private woman through state agencies, of snooping, of getting rid of political opponents?

You didn't ask the governance question then. You only said: we have to save India from Congress.

And since 2015-16, I've watched you mourn that decision. You've said sorry to me a million times, that you screwed up.

And yet, even today, you won't ask the same question you asked in 2014: does India need saving today, or not?

Instead you say: Rahul Gandhi has not proven himself in governance.

At what point will you realize that question has become irrelevant?

Yes, Rahul Gandhi isn't perfect. Even Mahatma Gandhi wasn't perfect. No leader ever has been. But Rahul isn't just substantially better than Modi. He's insanely better.

Then someone like you says: yes, Rahul's a great guy, but a leader in India needs to be street smart. And when you say "street smart," you mean cunning, corrupt, compromised.

I can't understand this street-smart thing anymore. Isn't being a good person supposed to be a good thing?

When someone says Rahul Gandhi hasn't proven himself in governance, but he's a good guy, what they really mean is that he hasn't demonstrated he can work the machinery the way the machinery is meant to be worked. Like Modi does.

It's as if we don't want good people to succeed in India. As if we've become so sick as a society that goodness now reads as weakness.

That's not a certificate of governance for Rahul Gandhi. That's a character certificate for us as a society.

PS: Before you judge my friend, don't. Voting BJP in 2014 doesn't make him a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone gets blinded by propaganda. And there's undeniable evidence that people were fed up with Congress by 2012. Anti-incumbency is a real thing.

मैनेजमेंट स्कूल्स में एक Three Envlopes Story काफी प्रचलित है.
एक सीईओ जब कंपनी छोड़ रहा था तो उसने नये सीईओ को तीन लिफाफे दिये और कहा जब संकट आए तो इन्हें बारी बारी से खोलना.
तीन महीने में सेल्स गिर गई, सीईओ की आलोचना होने लगी तब उसे पिछले सीईओ के लिफाफों की याद आई. उसने दराज से पहला लिफाफा निकाल कर खोला. अंदर एक लाइन लिखी थी "सारा दोष मुझ पर डाल दो".
उसने तुरंत प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस बुलाई और कहा सेल्स गिरने की वजह पिछला सीईओ था. सब बिगाड़ कर गया है – हम उसे ठीक कर रहे हैं.
सब मान गये और आलोचना बंद हो गई.
लेकिन घाटा कम नहीं हुआ और कुछ महीने में फिर आलोचना होने लगी. उसने फिर दराज खोली और दूसरा लिफ़ाफ़ा खोला. उस पर लिखा था Reorganise यानी बदलाव करो. उसने कुछ को हटाया, योजनाओं के नाम बदले. कुछ समय के लिए फिर लोग शांत हो गए और कंपनी के घाटे के बारे में सवाल पूछना बंद कर दिया.
लेकिन अगले क्वार्टर तक घाटा और बढ़ गया, चारों तरफ आलोचना बढ़ गई, इस्तीफे की बाते होने लगीं.
पिछले दो बार के तजुर्बों को देखकर उसने तीसरा लिफाफा खोला.
इस बार उसमें लिखा था अब आप तीन लिफाफे बनाइए.

मैं यह भी समझता हूं कि आपके शांतिपूर्ण आंदोलन के बीच विपक्ष के कुछ लोगों ने राजनीतिक लाभ के लिए माहौल बिगाड़ने और छात्रों को भटकाने की कोशिश की। आप सभी से अपील है कि आप ऐसे किसी भी राजनीतिक नैरेटिव के बहकावे में न आएं।

आप झारखंड का भविष्य हैं। आपकी आवाज़ को नजरअंदाज करना नहीं, उसे सुनना और आपकी समस्याओं का समाधान करना हमारी जिम्मेदारी है।
