How I Used Grok AI to Generate and Run a Custom Ruby Script for a Flagpole with Dome Base.
Description:
I wanted to quickly create a precise 3D model of a 2-meter flagpole with a realistic hemispherical dome base (20 cm diameter, 10 cm height) directly inside SketchUp. Instead of modeling everything manually, I leveraged Grok (xAI’s AI) to generate a complete, ready-to-use Ruby script tailored to my exact specifications.
Here’s the simple, powerful workflow I followed:
Prompt Grok AI –
I described the object with precise dimensions (pole height, dome radius, thickness, etc.). Grok instantly produced a clean, well-commented Ruby script using SketchUp’s native API.
Copy the generated script – The entire code (group creation, dome geometry with latitude slices, cylinder extrusion for the pole, etc.) was provided in a single block, ready for immediate use.
Paste directly into SketchUp’s Ruby Console –
I opened SketchUp, went to Extensions → Devoloper → Ruby Console, pasted the full script, and pressed Enter. Result in seconds – A perfectly centered, grouped 3D model appeared instantly in my scene: a smooth dome base and a clean cylindrical flagpole, all parametric and editable.
This method is incredibly efficient for repetitive or complex objects. No plugins required, no manual drawing, and total control over every parameter. I can now modify the script (change dimensions, add a golden sphere on top, or even a waving flag) and regenerate the model in under 10 seconds.
