"Freedom of Speech" Doesn't Mean Freedom to Terrorise
Some argue that holding people accountable for abusing women online violates free speech. Let’s be clear: cyberbullying is not “just words.” It is targeted harassment designed to intimidate, silence, and degrade, and women face the harshest and most sexualised forms of it.
If you didn’t know, many of these behaviours are already offences per Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act (2015) and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act (2015), which both prohibit harassment, emotional abuse, threats, and other forms of violence, including when they occur online.
Through #MenListen2Men, we're asking men to challenge each other. Call out your friends when they dismiss abuse as "banter." Speak up when group chats cross from disagreement to harassment and abuse. Teach boys and young men that respect online is not optional.
Your rights do not override someone else's safety. If your idea of “free speech” includes harming women, you’re not defending rights you’re defending violence.
If you’re experiencing online harm, support is available at https://t.co/veufhOffnZ.
