Last year, I did what I thought was a quiet, one-time good deed...How can an extended Family Bill me ₦250,000??

My aunt called me complaining that things were tight and her daughter needed ₦40,000 to register for her final school exams. I squeezed my budget, skipped hanging out for a month, and sent the money...I felt good about myself, that I helped out

That was my biggest mistake.
Fast forward to last week. My phone buzzed, and it was a WhatsApp message from the same aunty.... No greeting, no "how is work?" Just a picture of a university admission letter belonging to her second son.
Attached was a voice note: "My child, glory to God, your brother has gotten admission! We are looking at the clearance fees and accommodation, it’s about ₦250,000. When should we send the account details of the school so you can pay it?"

She didn't ask if I had the money. She didn't ask if I was surviving. Because I helped once, I had automatically been promoted to the official Chief Financial Officer of their entire household.

When I gently replied that things were incredibly tight for me right now, my aunt called me directly to tell me that "foundations are important" and I shouldn't let my cousins' blood be on my hands.

And I'm wondering how did we get here?
