April 29, 1975
One of the most iconic photographs taken during the fall of Saigon was shot by Dutch photographer Hubert Van Es.ย ย It captures a CIA Air America UH-1 flown by Robert Caron and co-pilot Jack โPogoโ Hunter on the roof of a building, one of the pilots assisting a group of refugees up a ladder.
Often misidentified as being the roof of the U.S. Embassy, the building was actually the Pittman Apartments, a CIA safehouse on 22 Gia Long Street, and home to the man in charge of the evacuation effort, Conrad โConnieโ Edward LaGueux, the CIAโs Deputy Chief of Station in Saigon, which was at that time the largest CIA station in the world.
LaGueux had served in the OSS in the Second World War, leading a 15-man Operations Group team and parachuting into occupied France to fight with the Resistance.ย ย He was then part of a team training Chinese paratroopers of Chiang Kai-shekโs Nationalist Army in their fight against the Japanese.
The photo above was taken on the day a complete American evacuation of South Vietnam was ordered - April 29, 1975 - as the NVA converged on Saigon.
The following morning, April 30, LaGueux, along with the CIA Chief of Station Thomas Polgar and Ambassador Graham Martin, sent the final cable from Vietnam to CIA Headquarters.ย ย It read: โโฆthis will be the final message from Saigon โฆ It has been a long and hard fight and we have lost.โ
A helicopter would evacuate them from the embassy later that afternoon.
Conrad โConnieโ Edward LaGueux passed away on June 26, 2001.ย ย He was 79. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
