A rundown on David Pierce’s press conference from the Patterson center @ Rice:
Rice Athletic Director, Tommy McClelland, states Pierce brought up the idea of coaching now or getting in the boat with the players and helping them row. And while the idea seemed far fetched, McClelland found it passionate. After a quick thanks to Jose Cruz Jr., the Cruz family and interim coach Parker Bangs, McClelland welcomed David Pierce to the stage.
Pierce’s opening remarks were a big thanks to Steven Trout (Texas State’s head coach) and Texas State University for bringing him on. Pierce mentioned he showed up around 11am stayed through practice then hopped in his truck and went home. Pierce said he wanted more. During his transition out of Texas, Pierce started feeling the “burn” to get back to being a head coach.
Pierce went into detail about his career and brought up the wonderful years he spent at each of his different schools: St. Pius HS, Rice, Episcopal HS, Houston, Rice, Sam Houston, Tulane, and Texas.
Pierce further went into depth about Wayne Graham and I quote Pierce “In my opinion Coach Graham is the greatest coach in college baseball history”. Pierce looks to bring winning back to Rice, a place he learned from Wayne Graham, his recently passed mentor.
Pierce gave a comedic anecdote on Wayne Graham: Graham would watch intrasquads from the bleachers and talk to scouts, fans, and pitchers, and when I was at Texas, I would sit with Graham, then Graham would give me pointers and end up telling me how to run my team. I told Coach (something along the lines not an exact quote) that you cant do that to me anymore. Pierce paused, then said I didn’t tell Coach that, I probably just said Yes Sir.
So, here we are.
Pierce comes into Rice with a 4-17 record with conference play beginning at FAU this weekend.
When a reporter asked, what is next, Pierce comically stated we have practice after this and then Boca Raton tomorrow, “a quick turn around”
Following that previous question, Pierce states “The goal is to play for championships.”
Pierce wants to win recruiting battles for players that are fit for Rice as a baseball program and as a school.
I look forward to seeing what Pierce can do at Rice.
