If you are travelling abroad for a long time and wish to reserve your Nigerian number, here's how you can do it.
Under Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) rules, inactive mobile lines can be deactivated and recycled after 180 consecutive days without activity.
If you're travelling abroad and don't want to lose your Nigerian number, here are two ways to keep it.
1. MTN - Keep My Number (KMN)
- 1 year: ₦3,500
- 2 years: ₦5,000
- 3 years: ₦7,500
You can text KMN1, KMN2 or KMN3 to 36500.
2. Airtel - Keep My Number (KMN)
- 1 year: ₦2,000 — Dial *4941#
- 2 years: ₦3,500 — Dial *4942#
- 3 years: ₦5,000 — Dial *4943#
3. Glo - Always On
- 1 year: ₦500
- Dial *777# and follow the menu to select Always On.
4. 9mobile - Extended SIM Validity
- 1 year: ₦500
- Recharge ₦500 and text 1 to 539, or dial 5391#.
These services help you retain your number even when you're not regularly using your SIM.
WHAT IF YOU NEED TO RECEIVE BANK OTPs AND CALLS ABROAD?
You'll need to activate international roaming before leaving Nigeria.
- MTN: Dial 3126# or use the MyMTN NG app.
- Airtel, Glo and 9mobile: Contact customer service or use the respective network's app to confirm that roaming is enabled.
Receiving SMS while roaming is generally free, but confirm your network's terms and roaming coverage in your destination country.
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL:
✅ Ensure your NIN is linked to your SIM.
✅ Activate roaming if you need OTPs and calls.
✅ Keep your SIM safe or check whether your network supports eSIM.
✅ Set a reminder to check your line periodically.
Remember: Keeping your number and receiving OTPs abroad are two different things. A retention plan helps preserve your number, while roaming allows you to use supported services abroad.
