Régis Le Bris has just taken Sunderland to the Europa League.

The vision of the Sunderland owner, Kyril, was that he wanted a youthful squad, hence, he had to appoint a manager that aligned with his vision for the club. A manager who understood youth, who knew how to develop them properly.

Don’t forget they had the youngest squad in League One, the youngest in Championship last season, and the 3rd youngest in the premier league.

Régis Le Bris:

His first job as a manager revolved around youth development. Worked as a youth coach at Wasquehal and later at Rennes, where he won the Championnat National U19 and the Coupe Gambardella with the under-19 team.

Next up, he was appointed Head of Youth Development at Lorient, managed u-17s and reserve team before being promoted to the first team manager at Lorient.

His reputation as a coach revolved around trusting and improving young players, and this was a factor in the Sunderland’s recruitment and playing identity, blending academy talent with promising young signings.

Le Bris is not just a manager who learned on the job, he also took it further academically. Man has a PhD in Sport Physiology and biomechanics, which reflects his interest in the “why” and “how” of performances of players, not just what to do on every matchday. He’s a well-learned guy. We should call him Dr Le Bris.

What amuses me the most is that Dr Le Bris is very calm, this is a trait you must have when dealing with youth. You’ll understand this more if you’ve ever raised teenagers😅

Don’t also forget how he blended this youth with the experience of Xhaka, Reinildo, Mukiele, and the likes. In order to achieve success, you must know how to strike a balance.

He has just led a newly-promoted Sunderland to 7th position. This is massive.
