#BREAKING In the seemingly endless saga of fiscal recklessness, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have been seen out on the town, armed with the nation's credit card. However, the party appears to have come to an abrupt end as Canada's federal finances plunged into a $44.4-billion deficit in the final month of the fiscal year.

After almost a year of relative financial stability, with federal finances enjoying a surplus position of $3.1-billion after the first 11 months of the fiscal year, the sudden and drastic shift into red is alarming. The government's spending spree in March 2023, resulting in a deficit that eclipses the $25.7-billion deficit recorded in the same month of the previous year, is not only cause for concern, but also indicative of a trend of fiscal irresponsibility.

An alarming trend has emerged in the form of public debt charges, which have ballooned by a staggering 42 percent, or $10.4-billion, from the previous fiscal year. These charges, essentially the interest payments on the national debt, are clear evidence of the government's increased and irresponsible borrowing.

While some might argue that borrowing is a necessary tool for government spending, especially during challenging economic times, such a level of fiscal recklessness carries a heavy cost. Each dollar spent on debt interest is a dollar that could, and should, have been directed towards vital public services such as healthcare. Our hospitals, doctors, and nurses are crying out for resources, but instead of funding these essential services, the government is using taxpayers' hard-earned money to pay off its credit card bill.

As the fiscal year came to a close, the deficit stood at $41.3-billion, slightly lower than the $43-billion Freeland had projected in her March 28 budget. This shouldn't be mistaken for fiscal responsibility. It's a stark reminder of the government's habit of underestimating its spending, only to exceed those estimates time and time again.

The credit card antics of Trudeau and Freeland need to come to an end. Canadians are counting on them to manage the nation's finances responsibly, not to rack up debt that future generations will be left to pay off. The party has ended and the bill has come due. It's time for the government to face the music and address the fiscal hangover that threatens to destabilize Canada's financial future.
