That community, that shared experience of teaching by everyone in the group, really helped me build rapport with the students. By helping each other learn, they became more invested in their learning. I hope to refine and apply this process in the future. @delta_dc

On my last day of teaching, the students told me they were glad I could be around to teach them math while they helped teach me how to be a more effective teacher. They're right, too. With the community we made, we all taught each other, students and teachers alike.
@delta_dc During yesterday's morning classes with a sub teacher, It was good to see students working independently on their lesson packet without causing any disruption, a common occurrence in the face of subs. WMAES and my CT have done a fine job of promoting student autonomy.
This teacher assisting semester has been interesting thus far... in the way that a mathematics teacher calls a problem interesting when it suddenly turns into a 3-page proof.
@delta_dc The EDI 331 seminar is going over our Folio B material again. If you happen to have pictures of our muses from 331-09, they would work very well with our first standard on strategies based in learner development.
A study conducted by Microsoft found that girls and young women in the U.S. are deterred from pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from an early age. https://t.co/wcbC8p3CHj
For most of my life I've had to be forced to take a substantial break. There's always something due, something coming up, something to prepare for. That can burn anyone out. Be careful with assigning anything over vacations, because students benefit tremendously from them. https://t.co/V2Lp6hJN3o
I made a visual for all the people asking about the time-line of our book series. The books are filled with visual, creative maths tasks & mindset messages. Every book has tasks that span across many grade levels, as they are low floor high ceiling tasks - the best kind!
Attended an all-day lecture by Dr. Stephanie Grant today on ways to help out students who are affected long-term by some form of trauma. As much as I wish I didn't have to use that information, I know that I soon will. We owe it to our students who have suffered enough already.
As a working-class student myself, I was scarcely able to attend university at all. Many in my tax bracket are not so fortunate, and they are made to feel like failures in life because of it. How many potential teachers or doctors have we lost to wealth inequality? https://t.co/BXwPkb7106
"How do schools begin to close the gap between rich and poor? I believe it starts by addressing the idea that being working class itself is a failure" https://t.co/NJCPvYaYPS
Ch. 5 of @ilana_horn's Motivated makes an important point: student confidence is often fragile, making them shy away from any potential mistake. As teachers, we must make them aware that mistakes are a valued part of the learning process.
Reminiscing of some old bulletin boards from work. #EDT370 friends, have you been practicing your bulletin board game?
(Look closely: Olaf’s boarder lights up 😉)
This article also poses very useful questions, much more than the K-12 ELA classes I remember. Exploring connections and hypothetical situations does much more for understanding than a set of questions expecting students to memorize quotes and events. https://t.co/51B5R3dMhr
My coordinating teacher uses the Engage NY curriculum as a base and supplements it with whatever online sources can give him relevant activities. What sites have my #EDT370 classmates found to be good educational resources?
I asked renowned origami artist Robert J. Lang for advice in applying paperfolding to math classes, and he led me to this book by Thomas Hull which is meant specifically for educators to do just that.

Have to keep this post in mind next time my CT leaves the room and chaos erupts. #EDT370 and my teacher assistant folks can use this information. https://t.co/Ghb8ECfaoP
A dismal chart indeed. While the sight of sleeping 9th graders is perhaps not as surprising with this knowledge, it's no less disheartening. How can we change a school's general attitude and culture to promote more long-term engagement? https://t.co/AQeCp81GM3
