@BBCr4today calm down, it is a classic by-election. Yes, Labour need to get their house in order but a General Election would be different. The Greens will struggle once questioned more.
@TheEconomist Good morning from the UK, please can you provide the answers to the quiz! And there is a typo in the article about the new UK Deputy PMs name. Thank you.
@PippaCrerar Thanks @PippaCrerar - do you think Sir Keir was aware of this "issue" and it formed a part of Darren Jones's appointment as Chief Secretary (de facto Deputy PM)????
Recent debates highlight a crucial point: it is never acceptable for vehicle dwellers to treat parks or residential streets as personal space or toilets. This harms local communities and those in genuine need.
We must draw a line between those facing genuine hardship and those choosing a transient lifestyle. It is never acceptable for vehicle dwellers to claim parks or residential streets as their personal space or toilet. Such arrangements create difficulties for both local communities and individuals who genuinely need support and help. Blurring this distinction makes it harder for councils to direct scarce resources where they are really needed. This is why enforcement matters.
To those who say “live and let live”: real compassion means more than tolerating problems at a distance. If you think vehicle dwelling on streets is fine, then be prepared to host an encampment outside your home.
Thanks to our campaigning, @BristolCouncil and Barry Parsons of @bristolgreen have restructured welfare and enforcement teams and reviewed their policy. The new policy will be published on 11 Sept, and we eagerly await their findings and proposals for resolving this issue. It should focus on targeted support for the genuinely vulnerable and removing voluntary vehicle dwellers, in line with other UK councils. We will be making this policy available for your individual responses to the Council.
On 13 Sep, I’ll be joining @darrenpjones MP for a townhall meeting on vehicle dwelling encampments. The limited number of tickets are now all taken. I will publish an update once I’ve heard back from Darren.
In the coming months, our committee will continue to press on key pressure points to ensure the Council delivers results.
👉 If you’re in genuine need, join us to get support.
👉 If you’re a resident, join us to press the Council to act.
👉 If you’re living a nomadic lifestyle, show dignity and respect by moving to a lower-impact area.

Together, we can secure a fairer, more balanced approach that protects both community wellbeing and those who truly need help.
