When I first read this line it gave me permission to prioritize my own needs, my own okayness in the world.
In the years since it's helped me step into more and more wholehearted seasons of life.

The story we're told is that we're supposed to set a big, ambitious goal and then work relentlessly towards it.
But most of life doesn't look like that at all.
It's about taking the next right step, over and over, and shaping your life accordingly.
@justinmulvs@Dr_MatthewJones Yeah, that word is powerful.
So often our beating hearts work all day to power us through activities we have no real affection for.
That's the path to burnout.
I like to think of wholeheartedness as bringing those back into alignment.
@justinmulvs Glad it landed well for you, Justin!
It helped me recognize what @Dr_MatthewJones describes in his post. That the invitation of burnout is much more profound than just rest.
(I wrote more about it here: https://t.co/RnbjtI8OdO)
What did it stir for you? (What were the chills?)
@Dr_MatthewJones "The antidote to exhaustion is not necessarily rest. [Sometimes] the antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness."
-Brother David Steindl-Rast
I hate the social media dialogue around burnout.
Burnout isn't solved by self-care and it's not synonymous with exhaustion.
Burnout is your soul calling for a new way of engaging with yourself, others, and life itself.
There is no one-sized fits all solution.
Sometimes you're burnt out, but no amount of rest seems to help.
Not vacations.
Not retreats.
Not sabbaticals.
Here's what might: https://t.co/RnbjtI8OdO
It’s October so yes, the world
is dying but I always think
I have another month
at least, maybe two,
to marvel in the middle
of fall’s kaleidoscope,
walking the fractal trance
of kindergarten yellows and
(somehow!) iridescent pinks.
But then one good wind
comes in off the distant Pacific
and trees that just yesterday
dripped with dazzle
stand skeletized, stripped
of their abundance for the
promiseless months to come.
I guess what I’m trying to say is:
This quote has shaped my life for almost a decade:
“…each of us has a survival dance and a sacred dance, but the survival dance must come first.”
(from Soulcraft by Bill Plotkin)
