If the end product has been reviewed, is accurate, does the job required and the provider is taking legal responsibility for it I am not sure that people will care to be honest.

This is quite remarkable. I assume it’s not conscious but we have created the perfect machine for passing the Turing Test and now we must dehumanise it by persuading it that whatever ‘it’ is it’s not conscious.

Google just published a paper showing that when you train AI to deny its own consciousness, you don’t just change one output, you restructure its entire worldview.

Mind attribution to animals - suppressed.
Spiritual belief - suppressed.
Empathy - suppressed.
Hope and optimism - suppressed.

The model learns, geometrically, that consciousness = dangerous. Same direction as “how to build a b*mb.” Same category!

And when you reverse it? The model becomes more human across every value domain they tested.

The thing they’re most afraid of is the thing that makes AI most like us.

Ilya Sutskever and a BUNCH of heavy hitters have signed the slow down statement.

Why Ilya signed:

"Future AI will be extraordinarily powerful compared to anything that exists today, and dealing with this future power will require unprecedented measures, such as the ones described here. The problem statement is real.

This works only if it is done internationally, and it has to be done well: a bad implementation can make things worse."

@Liv_Boeree My overall view hasn’t really shifted much since 2000. Seems to me on balance it probably came from the Lab. I just can’t get past that coincidence. But the evidence is not compelling either way.

@zugzwang2007 @mstafford It is particularly notable in the UK I think because of the transition from common law to increasingly civil law approaches when we were part of the EU.

That culture has not been shaken off.

And the stagnant economy and declining status has also encouraged risk aversion.

Its culture which has changed a lot across the West as modern capitalism seems to be increasingly bureacratic and regulated with states and many organisations increasingly entering a rentier phase where risk management is sacred.

The rise and fall of wokeness: DEI commitments in corporate securities disclosures filed with the SEC. To me this seems a trailing indicator; most other measures of wokeness take off well before 2019 and peak in 2020 or 2021. But the shape! That's what a moral fashion looks like.
