We are a culture that doesn't see death. It's medicalised and institutionalised. Grandad does not die in his bed anymore, his body is not laid on the dining room table for the wake, his casket is closed and few will visit the crematorium anyway. Out of sight, out of mind.

It's fascinating that the @guardian made this their headline news story.

It demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of democracy and epistemology.

**Democracy:**

Lord Falconer appears to be implying that a Muslim cannot hold an opinion because those opinions are influenced by their beliefs. To express her opinion is to impose a religious view on everyone else. Whereas an atheist is permitted to express an opinion, and that is not considered an imposition.

This implies that people of faith are not welcome to participate in public discourse because they are presumed to be biased.

**Epistemology:**

Everyone has a set of beliefs. Atheism, secularism, and humanism are all belief systems that rely on assumptions and presuppositions. Lord Falconer is either ignorant of this or hypocritically excluding people who don't share his faith commitments from democracy.
