Let's talk cows.
Canada’s dairy system is not simply a tariff wall designed to keep American milk out. It is a supply-management system designed to keep production roughly aligned with demand, stabilize farm income and preserve a viable network of family-owned farms. Imports are allowed in significant negotiated quantities at low or zero tariffs; the very high tariffs people hear about generally apply only after those agreed import quotas have been filled.

The United States protects its farmers too, often much more extensively, but it uses different mechanisms. American taxpayers support agriculture through crop insurance subsidies, income and price-support programs, disaster payments, commodity programs and direct government payments. Dairy farmers have access to federally supported margin-protection and insurance programs. The U.S. also restricts imports in sensitive sectors. Sugar is an especially obvious example: the United States uses tariff-rate quotas that limit how much foreign sugar can enter at low tariffs, precisely to protect domestic producers and prices. USDA explicitly describes this system.

So there is a real hypocrisy in attacking Canada as a protectionist outlier. Canada essentially says to its dairy farmers: we will control production and imports so you can earn a reasonably predictable income from the market. The United States more often says to its farmers: we will expose you more directly to the market, but protect your income through subsidies, federally supported insurance, price and commodity programs, and, where politically important, import restrictions. In 2026 alone, USDA forecasts federal Dairy Margin Coverage payments, while its broader farm programs continue to provide income, commodity and insurance support.

Both countries protect agriculture. They just write the cheque differently.

And that matters to the family farm. Canada’s system was designed in part to prevent the boom-and-bust cycle in which oversupply collapses milk prices, smaller farmers fail, and increasingly large operations buy them out. Supply management gives a farmer greater certainty that producing milk efficiently can provide a viable living without having to become an enormous industrial-scale operation merely to survive the next price collapse.

That does not make Canada’s system perfect. Quota is expensive and can make it difficult for new farmers to enter. But portraying Canadian dairy protection as some extraordinary trade offence while the United States protects its own farmers with quotas, tariffs, subsidies, insurance and government support is fundamentally misleading.

Canada protects a relatively small number of agricultural sectors openly through supply management. The United States protects agriculture through an enormous, less visible architecture of federal programs and selective trade barriers. Calling one “protectionism” while pretending the other is “free trade” is the hypocrisy.

Canada 🇨🇦 is fighting enormous #wildfires. Firefighters are risking their lives. Families are evacuating. Communities are watching the horizon and wondering whether they’ll still have homes tomorrow.

And a depressing number of Americans demand that #Canada somehow “control” millions of acres of burning wilderness.

The president threatens tariffs…

I’m not that old but I still remember a time when this country used to send help when people were in danger.

Canada is our closest neighbor, one of our oldest allies, and one of the first countries to show up when Americans need help. The common sense response is compassion, cooperation, and every available firefighting resource we can spare.

Helping allies shouldn’t be controversial. Wake the hell up, #USA, and stop acting like petulant children.

Canada’s boreal forest — the source of much of the wildfire smoke drifting into the U.S. — isn’t like our managed forests in the lower 48.
It’s the largest intact forest ecosystem on Earth: roughly 1.3 billion acres (about 78 times larger than Alaska’s Tongass, our biggest national forest, and 7 times larger than all 154 U.S. National Forests combined). It stretches in an almost continuous belt from the Yukon to Newfoundland.
Why can’t they just do controlled burns like we do here?
Because most of it is remote, roadless wilderness.
• Less than 9% of Canada’s population lives in the boreal region.
• Less than 1% of the forest itself is developed.
• Vast areas have no roads and are only accessible by aircraft or winter roads.
You can’t send crews in to do prescribed burns across a billion+ acres of inaccessible terrain the way we can in populated areas near roads and communities in the U.S. Wildfire has been nature’s primary management tool in these ecosystems for thousands of years.
Smoke reaching the Northeast isn’t new either. It happened in 1950, 1988, 1995, 2002, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2025, and now 2026. Weather (especially upper-level wind patterns) determines where the smoke goes, not just where the fires are burning.
Blaming Canada’s government for “not controlling” these fires is political theater. The scale and inaccessibility make large-scale suppression or prevention across that wilderness fundamentally different — and in many places, practically impossible — from managing forests near U.S. population centers.
Nature runs that forest. Politicians don’t. Let’s stop pretending otherwise.

An Alberta judge just froze more than $8.5 million in assets belonging to Jeffrey Rath, the lawyer who’s been the legal face of the Alberta separatist movement.

The injunction came from an application by the Tallcree First Nation. They’re trying to remove Rath and his firm from overseeing the band’s roughly $15 million trust, set up after a 2017 settlement with the federal government over broken agricultural promises.

Here’s the money trail. Courts already ordered Rath to repay Tallcree $8.5 million over a fee dispute, a ruling the Alberta Court of Appeal upheld last November. Then in November 2025, Tallcree alleges Rath moved that exact same amount, $8,518,075, out of the trust account and into his own corporation’s account. BMO’s records confirmed the transfer.

It gets worse. On June 26, the same day Rath was removed as trustee in an urgent hearing, his firm allegedly wired another $106,000 to an unknown recipient. Tallcree’s court filing says roughly two thirds of the trust’s assets have been drained since 2024.

Justice Marion, who granted the freeze, wrote he had reason to believe Rath’s assets would be “dissipated or removed” before any judgment could be reached. Rath is currently limited to $10,000 for living expenses and $100,000 for legal fees until the next hearing.

This is the same man who’s been touring Alberta as legal counsel for the Alberta Prosperity Project, building the legal case for secession. Worth remembering next time he talks about protecting Albertans’ interests.
