He reached for the bucket. 'Fair enough. Close your mouth.'
I clamped my mouth and eyes shut and he poured the blood over my head, like some kind of perverse pagan baptism. I spluttered and coughed as it ran down my face. 'What is this shit?'
I desperately wanted him to stay, seized by the nonsensical idea that if he left, I would lose him, irretrievably. 'Tell me in sadness, who is that you love,' I said, searching the parts of his face I could see for a flicker of reciprocal feeling.
His fingertips felt like ice. 'But now?' I said. 'Why?' His arm fell lifelessly to his side.
He looked away and said, 'Oliver, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I want to hurt the whole world.'
Relief—hope—something—finally warmed his face. 'Are you—'
'Yeah, I am,' I said, the only possible answer to whatever he wanted to know. 'Let’s go.' I turned toward the FAB.
James laughed brokenly, and I felt something deep between my lungs crack clean in two. 'Th’ hast spoken right; ’tis true,' he said. 'The wheel is come full circle; I am here.'
But what I am, want teaches me to think on:
A man throng’d up with cold: my veins are chill, And have no more of life than may suffice
To give my tongue that heat to ask your help; Which if you shall refuse, when I am dead,
For that I am a man, pray see me burièd.
'This is guesswork, of course, but I think James liked me for the opposite reasons that I liked him. Everyone called me ‘nice,’ but what they really meant was ‘naïve.’—
'I found the boat hook.' I wished, suddenly, for the wild howling wind of the previous night. The stillness of the world beneath the dark dome of the sky was suffocating, massive, unbearable. 'I found the boat hook, shoved inside your mattress.'
My stomach, knotted and clenched a moment before, unexpectedly unwound. My pulse slowed. 'No,' I said. Filippa’s words echoed softly in my head. 'Before last night, everything was fine.'
'Oliver, I want you to do the opposite,' Camilo said. 'Imagine you’ve provoked this attack, and when it happens, let the feeling hit you even though the fist doesn’t.'
'It means that you have better reasons than the rest of us to hold a grudge, but you’re also the first one who’s going to forgive him.' The unsettling feeling that Filippa could see right through my skin made me squirm deeper into the mattress.
The following morning, James dragged me out of bed a little after seven to go for a run. The bruises on his arms had faded to a rotten green, but he wore a sweatshirt with the sleeves pulled down to his wrists. It was cold enough by then that it didn’t look peculiar.
'I what, James? I don’t understand.'
He let his hand fall back to his side, and he gave me that same helpless, hopeless shrug. 'I never wanted you to look at me the way you’re looking at me right now.'
Me: 'Draw thy sword, That, if my speech offend a noble heart, Thy arm may do thee justice. Here is mine.' I drew my sword, and James raised his eyebrows, faintly amused. I crossed downstage to the top of the Bridge.
