@henrywinter I live in the States and tried to buy tickets directly multiple times for England games, and didn't win the opportunity. Seeing what the travel and hotel costs woukd have been, sort of glad I missed out.
@daveweigel I've only been able to vote in California since 2004, I think I have voted in almost 40 elections with an election almost every year, a primary every other, and several special elections.
@GiuliaBould What's more interesting to me, is my students all hate new Star Wars films but adore the prequels. I tried rewatching the prequels with my kids and I just remembered how bad they were the whole time that I ended up enjoying the new Star Wars films more.
@GiuliaBould I constantly switch between Rogue One and Empire myself. The reason I love both of those films is you really feel the stakes/threat of the villains.
@jbarro Plus California has to do more substantial efforts with regard to fraud, a slow process ensures someone didn't mail a ballot in and in person vote. California opted for a trade off, some people who don't live here want to opine.
@jbarro That isn't quite true though, all states certify the final result weeks after. So literally no state is actually done the night of. California's allowance of 7 days with ED postmark plus 10 day curing period with long certification window draws it out more.
@Elex_Michaelson My main opposition currently to any changes is it rewards the misinformation and lies, if those opposed to the current system were honest brokers I'd be willing to consider reforms.
@PaulRieckhoff Not sure if open primaries are the pancea people think they'll be. Our wide open primary in California for instance appeared to make both the state GOP and DNC more extreme.
I'll concede with gerrymandering the real election today is the primary, thus closed makes little sense.
@brad_polumbo If he is your standard of a radical leftist you really don't know enough radical leftists, because they basically call people like Talarico et. al. practically a Republican non stop.
@SeanTrende Take this with the grain of salt as a non believer raised Catholic who still feels a strong connection to many of the values of the church, it is pretty funny to see evangelicals right wing culture purists throw the word heretic around to describe another denomination.
Not to pile on to bad takes from this, I was talking to my HS students about college and they were all talking about looking forward to how thier colleges next year have a Chick-Fil-A etc. on campus, when I asked how much it'll cost them. it's on the meal plan.
@janecoaston Co-workers have been making fun of me for years for this but my lunch has been pretty much the same thing for 20 years as a teacher. Just a homemade sandwich, yogurt, fruit, and crisps, maybe costs about $3 to make.
@ALANMYERSMEDIA I'm 43, I've lived in the states since I was 5. I was asked recently by one of my students (a disappointmented Chelsea fan) have you ever just wanted to give up on Everton. I said I would love nothing more than to see Everton lift a cup, but not sure if I'll see that.
@tomrenniesoccer How about this fact, Everton are the only team not to get a VAR intervention in their favour. They have already admitted to 3 penalties VAR should have awarded us.
The officiating in the league is a joke.
@sircalebhammer Wait to see what happens to food prices, the fertilizer impacts will likely not be felt until 2027, diesel starting to hit $8+ in California is huge since that is like 15% of US Agriculture.
@tomrenniesoccer As an Everton supporter who has seen all sorts of nonsense bad calls, including that handball you got away with recently there is that tribal urge to go with these things balance out.
However, the absurd inconsistentcy needs to stop VAR was meant to fix this. It's made it worse.
@brad_polumbo Uncap the House by undoing the 435 limit. Every state should have minimum of 2 members. Smallest sized district in lowest populace state becomes uniform standard size rounded up. Perhaps all states having independent commissions.
@SeanTrende Look at a 57/43 state (Florida 2024 President) but Congressional map is starts to look 24:4, what faith will people even have in elections.
I feel like a sucker for supporting the independent redistricting in California now. Which is unfortunate for our republic.
