Today is my birthday. And somehow, I am beginning fifty suspended between earth and sky.

I had a flight to catch, so here I am, looking down at the world from an airplane window, thinking about the woman I have become and all the women we are still fighting to be free enough to become.

When my feet touch the ground again, I want to write something in praise of turning fifty.

In praise of women.
In praise of life.
In praise of the freedoms that were taken from us and the stubborn, beautiful ways we have fought to take them back.

I want to write in praise of being rebellious. Of being untamed. Of becoming the kind of woman who no longer asks permission for her age, her body, the lines on her face, the volume of her voice, or the choices she makes with her own life.

Fifty does not feel like the end of youth to me. It feels like arriving at an age when you finally understand how much of a woman’s life can be stolen by the fear of being judged.

So this is what I want to tell women:

Don’t be afraid of the number.
Don’t be afraid of getting older.
Don’t be afraid of being seen.

Laugh loudly. Speak loudly. Fall in love. Dance. Fight. Begin again.

Perhaps this, too, is freedom: reaching a point in your life when you finally have the courage to belong completely to yourself.

I was honored to join the President and First Lady, Secretary Hegseth, and General Caine this morning for the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Observance Ceremony at the Pentagon.

Let us always remember:

That those who thought the world could be ruled by hate and fear were wrong. Our country did not let that dark vision of humanity stand.

That vigilance is still required to protect and secure us.

That we are one people — drawn from different religious, ethnic and national origins, but forged into an extraordinary whole — we are American.

That we are called to protect each other and to care for one another.

That freedom is fragile and must be defended and won by each generation.

That we are a fortunate people who enjoy the blessings of liberty and must never take them for granted.

The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans V that struggle is a privilege — that out of it comes perseverance and hope.

September 11 tested us, but it did not break us. As we meet the many challenges ahead, may the memory of our response to that searing experience bring hope for our future as a country and as a people.
