.@Doug_D_Stuart has done it again.

John of John is a tender, beautifully written novel about family, identity, love and the lasting consequences of silence.

When Cal returns to his remote Scottish island home to care for his grandmother, he is forced back into a complicated relationship with his father, John. What unfolds is a deeply moving exploration of the masks we wear to make others comfortable, and how hiding who we are can create silences that echo across generations.

One line stayed with me long after I finished the book:

“How can you tell a man that hates himself that his son is made in his image?”

For me, that captures the heart of the novel. Much of its tragedy comes not from a lack of love, but from an inability to believe oneself worthy of it.

One of the most affecting queer novels I’ve read in a long time.

Andy Burnham is an absolute disgrace of a man to be honest, isn’t he? He’s allowing working class kids, brought up and educated in working class communities, that have attended state schools and ended up doing incredibly well academically against the odds and gone on to our top university’s and graduating to be appointed as cabinet ministers. He should resign immediately, should he not? It’s not where you come from, it’s where you are going that matters and being nice along the way is a good thing too.
