Now that @elonmusk has confirmed @Tesla will be using #LFP in some US Model 3's the normal Q's around patents and licensing have arisen.
This is a thread on the 3 key patents and why #China can produce low cost LFP

Have felt the chill in the Chinese #battery winter
1) more and more Tier 2 battery makers are laying off workers
2) an increasing number of projects got cancelled along supply chain
3) net profit plunge & loss making will be key words for 🔋-related annual reports

Very interesting to see @Lamborghini licensing an organic cathode material from @MIT
The fast charging properties are what makes TAQ attractive to the OEM
This is the first organic cathode license for an EV I have seen

Dr James Frith on 2023 battery news and a look ahead at 2024
@JamesTFrith of @VoltaEnergyTech talks all things battery storage.
Esp. the competition between China, US, and EU to built out mfging and supply chains.
Big changes coming, folks.

Battery prices across sectors have converged in recent years, which is an indication of the industry’s maturation and growth. The price differences across sectors can be attributed to differences in maturity and order volumes, but also cell and pack design requirements. (4/5)
The drop in battery prices is attributed to lower raw material costs due to significant growth in production capacity across the value chain. Meanwhile, demand may have fallen short of industry expectations.

The average battery pack price number is a result of more than 300 survey data points that BNEF collected from buyers and sellers of batteries from various sectors. China's e-bus and commercial EV sector had the lowest prices at 100/kWh, while prices for BEVs were $128/kWh. (3/5)
What's next? Battery prices are expected to closely follow the trajectory of raw material prices in the near term. In the long-term, battery pack prices are expected to fall below $100/kWh in 2027.

The results from @BloombergNEF's 2023 lithium-ion battery price survey are out. Battery prices are back to their declining trajectory, after an unprecedented year of increases in 2022. Average pack prices reached a new record-low of $139/kWh, a 14% decline from last year.⬇️
After a brief rise in 2022, inflation-adjusted Lithium-ion battery prices are falling again, according to the latest battery analysis from BloombergNEF led by @EvelinaStoikou. Pack costs fell 14% this year (largest annual decline since 2018) to $139/kWh. https://t.co/kGMGK1UB2b
The results of @BloombergNEF's 2023 Battery Price Survey are in!
🔋💲🔻
Average prices have fallen by 14% to $139/kWh
This is great news for an industry that was hit hard by raw material prices rises in 2022

Toyota will only produce enough solid state cells for 10,000 EVs by 2030
A long way from the claims of introducing solid state cells to the mass market by 2025…
This seems far more realistic and achievable, expect a high price tag

A nice post on how to become a 🔋 expert, it reminds me that @BloombergNEF's Battery Price Survey will be published soon
My bet for the 2023 av. pack price is: $134/kWh Where do you think it will come out?

$3.5B from the DoE to support domestic manufacturing in the US.
If you read the announcement, the emphasis on advanced battery manufacturing is interesting as the last round of funding was focused on deploying current commercial tech.
