Months of rate hikes and rising cost pressures have yet to take the heat out of WA household spending, with retail turnover rising 1.4% in September. The all-important 'retail volume' series - which strips out price effects - also edged up, hitting a new record high.

The IMF's latest WEO highlights accumulating risks to the global economy. While an overall decline in global GDP "is not currently in the baseline forecast", they expect around one-third of the global economy to be in a technical recession in 2022-23, as shown below.
In this week's 60s wrap, @CCI_WA@JamesWalsh65 highlights:

The RBA slowed the pace of hikes to 0.25% earlier today, taking the cash rate to 2.6% - in line with CCIWA's view. Financial markets now anticipate a materially lower path for interest rates than only one week ago - as illustrated below.
WA's unemployment rate edged down to 3.1% in August - the second lowest in the nation. Around 900 West Aussies found a job over the month, driven primarily by an increase in part-time work.

The household sector underpinned WA's economy in June, with the removal of COVID-19 measures and high savings stimulating spending on transport, clothing and recreation. The biggest drag was non-dwelling investment, reflecting the completion of existing projects
Fresh data today showed growth in WA's domestic economy plateaued in the June quarter - up 0.1%. Despite the slowdown, we're still at a strong level of overall activity - well above pre-COVID levels (as shown below).
The RBA has pulled the trigger on another 50bp rate hike, lifting the cash rate target to 2.35%. We estimate that an additional ~40,000 WA households will reduce their discretionary spending as a result of this decision.
"WA's economy - particularly small & medium enterprises - are bearing higher costs of doing business and interest rates."
