My son’s picking his subjects for National 5s next year. The only subjects *not* to go in a compulsory column are Cookery, Spanish & French. If the curriculum explicitly places a lower value on modern languages, what hope has #Latin got of getting back in the classroom?
Today I learned how to bookmark a URL at the top of my browser & now I feel ready to take on the world! Occasionally my lack of IT skill surprises even me, but it does mean that when I discover something 'new', I get wildly excited by how much it will improve my life.
& lastly, keeping it Roman, there's #Cicero & #Lucan#hops, which were developed in Slovenia & Czech Republic respectively. Not sure why they're named after #Romans though... anyone at #ClassicsTwitter know of a link b/w those guys & Pannonia or Noricum? //END
'The lies of magicians' say that (amethysts) prevent drunkenness, hence their name...a statement that, I believe, cannot have been written without a contemptuous derision for the human race.'
Blimey; not pulling any punches there #Pliny!...
I've been trying to get a flight refund since last June (travel agent now in liquidation). I swear to god every new email reminds me of the12 tasks of #Asterix...🤬🤪

How cool! #homeschooling for business+computing & son is studying encryption. He's set a task with a #Caesar cipher. Turns out the msg is all about JC's route through the cursus honorum! Got to explain all the diff magistracies without even needing a shoe-horn! #classicsninja 🥷
Not too sure about the story on the back of label though... #ClassicsTwitter anyone know if Silenus predates #Greek#mythology? (not my area tbh!)
The pic is pretty similar to this other tile, also found in France (& mistakenly ID'd as #Bacchus)

Another S.African #Bordeaux blend comes from Holden Manz winery in Franschhoek. The label depicts a tile, supposedly of Roman origin, that features the face of Bacchus - god of the vine, wine, parties and frivolity etc. #classicalreception#classicsreception(wee thread)
Silenus: satyr, companion of Dionysus, fan of #wine & general drunk pops up in the #myth of king Midas. And also here, on this bottle of #Limoux from the Co-op, soon to go into tonight's risotto #classicalreception#ancientdrinksreception
Xenophon gives us more info in his Anabasis 1.2.14:
λέγεται Μίδας τὸν Σάτυρον θηρεῦσαι οἴνῳ κεράσας αὐτήν.
It's said Midas caught the satyr by mixing wine with (water from the spring)
Then when Silenus fell asleep Midas nabbed him!
(Pausanias 1.4 gives a similar story)
