A mayor in Ibaraki who had taken office only two months earlier was found dead in a drainage canal, with police quickly suggesting suicide.
What makes this particularly difficult to accept at face value is that he had recently introduced a local reward system for reporting illegal employment of foreign workers — a policy that had drawn strong opposition from certain groups in the area.
A veteran politician who had just won a close election, actively moving on such a policy, and then dying under these circumstances with no clear motive or note.
It is hard not to wonder whether this was truly a straightforward suicide.
In other countries, when a newly elected local official pushing against illegal immigration dies under unclear conditions, does the public also find it difficult to simply accept the official explanation?
