NAOMI KLIEIN to SAM ALTMAN:
"...you ingested the entire written output of human civilization without consent, without compensation and without credit to build a system whose primary commercial application is eliminating the jobs of the people whose work you consumed.
You are not 'liberating human creativity' -- you are strip-mining it and selling it back at a markup while calling the theft 'training data'."
After months of preparation and waiting, I was given a letter from the Japanese government about my permanent residency.
Unfortunately, it has been nothing more than a rude wake up call and a reminder of what I am here.
I vented my thoughts out in this post. It's a tough day.
As we work to build better societies, valuing the people who do most of the care labor (mostly women), let's remember something else Mead said:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Now it is official.
"In relation to Israels military operations in Gaza, we conclude that Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes. Including extermination, murder, using starvation as a method of war, forcible transfer"
(UN Human Rights Council)
During his interview with MSNOW's Symone Sanders-Townsend and Eugene Daniels, Hasan Piker talks about Hamas, the Palestinian resistance as a whole and the issue with the concept of a 'perfect victim.' He compares it with other liberation movements throughout history: "And that is the issue at the heart of the matter; people want perfect victims. Whether they be Black people engaging in the Civil Rights' struggle, historically, whether it be the forces against apartheid in South Africa, whether it be the liberation struggle in Algeria. The expectation from the white moderate or the expectation from people who enjoy the order that exists in civilized society, is that people are not supposed to fight back and try to even match the intensity or the violence of the occupation, the colonial entity or the forces of police brutality that are defending white supremacy. So, that's the reason why I make this distinction. I want people to start thinking; what would they do in that situation? What would they do if they lived in the world's largest open air prison that's hermetically sealed, that is a nuclear armed state, that is backed by the most powerful entity on the planet?"
cost of living is abysmal. you’ll never buy a home, pay off your student loans or retire at a reasonable age. you need to work gig economy jobs for disposable income and your premiums are going up for the insurance tied to the job you hate. meanwhile politicians tell you, we can’t pay for healthcare or schools but we just signed off on another $2.8 bn to israel. we’re also lighting all our assets on fire in the strait of hormuz for this foreign countries belligerent project. then beltway bandits ask why americans are turning towards socialism and antizionism.
Beginning in 2006, Tokyo Medical University began secretly limiting female applicants to ensure that more men became doctors.
Female applicants’ admissions test scores were dropped 10-20% right out of the gate, but that still wasn’t enough, so they automatically added 20 bonus points to the scores of all male applicants who had failed the exam less than four times.
The goal was to keep female enrollment at 30% or less, and when this was uncovered accidentally in 2018, Japanese authorities launched a nationwide audit of 81 medical schools. At least 9 other universities were caught doing the same thing — denying qualified female applicants in favor of less-qualified men. Many other institutions were suspected.
The justifications were, quite frankly, pathetic. TMU claimed that they were doing it because they assumed women would eventually leave the medical profession to marry and have children — you know, because women aren’t capable of balancing motherhood and a career.
Juntendo University claimed they adjusted women’s scores because women have better communications skills and mature faster, giving them an “unfair advantage” over men.
Kitasato University claimed men were more “flexible,” and could better handle the overnight/on call scheduling demanded of student doctors.
Kanazawa Medical University and Iwate Medical University claimed that men were more likely to work in rural areas, where there is a shortage of doctors. There was no statistical evidence to support this statement, but that’s what they said.
St Marianna University School of Medicine flat out denied the charges, even after the government investigation found objective statistical proof that they had consistently marked down the test scores of female applicants. Instead, they blamed “irregularities” in their internal screening criteria. They did not specify the nature of these irregularities.
This scandal proved something that Japanese women had suspected for over a quarter of a century: that they were being deliberately excluded from the medical profession. For decades, the rate of female medical students had hovered in the 30% range. It was referred to as the “40% barrier,” and medical schools always claimed it existed naturally.
They were lying.
In late 2018, the Japanese government ordered medical schools to stop rigging scores. In the very next cycle of entrance exams, women outscored and outperformed men at multiple institutions for the first time in Japanese history. By 2023, the “40% barrier” had been broken.
This scandal didn’t happen 50 years ago. Within the last decade, qualified female applicants were being rejected from major Japanese medical schools in favor of waitlisted men. Their scores were artificially reduced, while male applicants had their scores inflated. As a result, just 23.6% of Japanese doctors are women.
This leaves Japanese women with very limited choices when it comes to female-only medical care. We know that female doctors take female patients more seriously. How many Japanese women are getting substandard medical care because their doctor is a man who was given a high score, and not a woman who actually earned one?
imagine if someone in 2016 told me that in 10 years I’d have more respect for Macklemore than Radiohead. the kind of prediction that medieval kings used to kill their seers for making.
The US is a barbaric capitalist dystopia.
A court just ruled that people do NOT have a right to clean water, or to truthful information from the government.
This came after the city of Jackson, Mississippi misled residents into drinking what it knew was lead-contaminated water.
"Gaza...not a region-specific humanitarian emergency but a geopolitical project of human and ecological destruction, territorial conquest, and racialized dehumanization that tests - and reveals the limits and hollowness of the so-called rules-based liberal international order."
Hasan asks if he is for or against an embargo against Israel. Khanna says he wants to sanction individuals in the Israeli government but says a full embargo & sanctions on Israel (a nation committing apartheid & genocide) is going "too far"
⭕️ Immigration Judge Ruled a Man’s Pro-Palestine Views Mean Nothing He Says Can Be Believed
Yaakub Vijandre, a 38-year-old Filipino-American photojournalist and DACA recipient, has been held in ICE detention for nine months over pro-Palestine social media posts and posts opposing U.S. torture of prisoners, according to a member of his legal team attorney Eric Lee. Vijandre came to the U.S. in 2001 at age 14 and has no criminal record, but was arrested outside his Texas home in October 2025, a day after he filmed a city council meeting on the ICE detention of a local Palestinian community leader.
In denying him relief in March 2026, an immigration judge ruled that his politics rendered his testimony unreliable, writing that “the respondent’s worldview is informed by extremist ideology to such an extent that he no longer has the ability to provide reliable or credible factual statements,” and that he lacks a “meaningful grasp of truth about terrorism and terrorists.”
