My Art Journey Part 2
After reading the first chapters of my newly acquired art fundamentals books, I didn't know how to bring those new concepts into practice.
These initial sections delved into the essence of Colors and their various components. I was introduced to the concepts of Values, Hues, and Chroma. The chapters also began to touch upon the basic principles of light and shadow, and how simple forms like Spheres and Cubes can be depicted solely through value changes.
I began by sketching some spheres, and trying to capture the correct values for diverse hues. But truthfully, this task wasn't very stimulating. While I understand the importance of these exercises, they bore a striking resemblance to your average classroom drill and, quite frankly, it felt mundane. I suppose it's because these exercises lack the charm that usually accompanies art.
So I decided to shake things up and simply started "copying" some paintings in the books, focusing primarily on the shifts in values and the hues in general. I later discovered that what I was doing is termed a "study" in art lingo.
That was undoubtedly more captivating. I gained heaps of knowledge because, for the first time, I truly noticed the intricate details embedded in those paintings, which, interestingly, were achieved with quite broad strokes. This truly sparked my curiosity. It was fascinating.
I suppose with more experience under your belt, you understand better which strokes are crucial for conveying detail, thus drastically reducing the number of strokes required.
Here are my "study" paintings from March 2023
My studies are depicted of the following paintings by their respective artists:
- "Cthulhu" by Andy Walsh
- Unknown Name by Gilles Beloeil
- "The King" by Lorenzo Lanfranconi

Besides being an App developer, I'm also an aspiring artist exploring the world of drawing and painting. 🎨
While I've dabbled in creating art in the past and did some drawings here and there, it was only four months ago that we got a new little lamp in my home. The lamp's design fascinated me as it beautifully highlighted the interplay of light and shadow. However, my initial attempts to capture this interplay on canvas couldn't truly convey its reality or beauty.
That led me to buy some art books that talk about art fundamentals. And these resources really ignited my passion and set me on a journey to become better at expressing what I truly see in the world.
Since then, I've been trying to apply those fundamentals to each painting I create, step-by-step.
Today, I felt compelled to share my paintings. It's not about receiving feedback; I simply want them out there. Whether anyone responds or not, the act of sharing allows me to track my progress. In the coming days and weeks, I'll be sharing my latest artworks.
So here are my first paintings of this lamp, created four months ago.
