Hanging up his clogs having worked in The Mater for as long as I have been alive. I’m so proud of all he has achieved and the legacy he leaves behind. Delighted to have had the chance to see him in action and will always cherish the memories of getting to scrub in together

1/5 We are extremely concerned over the fate & wellbeing of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan hospital who was detained by Israeli forces along with others during a raid on the hospital on 27 December. He must be released immediately and unconditionally.

The all-male line-up at the launch of the Dublin City Taskforce report might have been a witless faux-pas, but it highlights that O'Connell Street - with its meridian line of all-male statues - is in dire need of women.
It's time to repopulate it with the stories of the women who shaped it, such as businesswoman Agnes Ryan (1890-1971) from Tipperary, who, when widowed at age 43 with eight children, replied to rumours of bankruptcy by buying a new car, one of the first Daimlers to be seen in Dublin.
She went on to buy the 30-roomed Burton Hall in Sandyford in 1938 and oversaw a very successful business which, at its peak, employed 500 people in 26 shops, a pub, two bakeries and two tearooms.
The story — and the business — began very near the Parnell statue when Agnes and her fiancé, Seamus Ryan, a former creamery manager, leased a premises on Parnell Street in Dublin in 1918. According to family lore, when Agnes looked out the window and saw the monument to her hero Charles Stewart Parnell, she considered it a good omen.
Business was so brisk and the couple so committed that they went straight back to work after marrying the following year, in 1919, at the nearby Pro-Cathedral.

As someone who has been a journalist for almost 40 year, working as a senior writer at the New York Times, Newsweek, etc, the decision by @WilliamLewis, a Murdoch alum, to cripple the @washingtonpost by abandoning endorsements, is one of the most craven actions I've ever seen../1
