Today is the feast of St Frideswide, the Anglo-Saxon nun who is the patron saint of Oxford. She led a religious community in the early 8th century on the site of what is now Christ Church Cathedral, where this medieval window of her survives.
Today we remember St Francis of Assisi (c.1181-1226), the Italian mystic, poet and friar known for his poverty, charity and humility. St Francis is especially remembered for his love of God's creation, and his feast day marks the end of the Church's new Season of Creation.
Waited since I was 7 years old to see the Bayeux Tapestry. Got in an hour-long online queue to spend £50 on tickets. Got there ahead of time. Stood in a queue for 20 minutes. Then was told halfway through the queue that the gallery was closing.
The @britishmuseum stinks 😭
A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system.
Today I set out a different path for Britain.
You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics.
Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love.
If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other.
It's time to draw a line.
To move beyond a decade of drift and division.
To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country.
To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode.
To hope again.
@MatSilk@AliJaneMoore It is vastly improved, but businesses take up retail space and lack of footfall means they don’t all survive. I use the P&R too. To Alison’s point Cornmarket is improving but it’s awash with Harry Potter kitsch shops.
@MatSilk@AliJaneMoore It is very complex. The retail side of the city centre is shrivelling up. Of course guests/tourists don’t come to see that but closed up shops and cafes sends a sad message.
I get 25 “passes” through the city per year as I live in the county.
