Established in 1954, @rjlCardinals is located along South Peninsula Dr. in Daytona Beach. The school was named after Rupert J. Longstreet, a prominent figure in Peninsula schools. Originally built for $161,000, it had eight classrooms, an administrative suite, and a lunchroom. Longstreet Elementary was one of the first Volusia County Schools to have separate art and music rooms. In May of 1987, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the cafeteria. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the resilient Longstreet community rallied together. Nearby schools provided support, and Florida Power and Light assumed responsibility for the rebuilding efforts. Throughout its history, the school has thrived as a hub for community involvement. Today, Longstreet Elementary continues to be a cherished institution, with its picturesque location and dedication to lifelong learning, it remains a cornerstone of the Daytona Beach community. #VCSThrowbackThursday
