Marian Rivera Brings it Home
Filmmaker Kip Oebanda (Liway) thrills us and haunts us with the film “Balota”/ Ballot. A film about election turmoil. It is finally available on Netflix worldwide.
Just some thoughts:
- Screenplay took a while to land and fuse into the nitty gritty of the story. I will admit, it starts a bit slow and can feel aimless. but once it starts to the actual conflict, it is a jolt. The more thrilling parts really get to you. To the point that it crawls inside you. The high tension is effective and you are just as lost in the world of Teacher Emmy.
- It is both a parody and a chilling thriller with a haunting message.
I’ll admit it, I like the tone of the nail-biting thriller a lot more than the comedy. To the point that sometimes the comedy distracts us. The conclusion even feels too on the nose. Almost teleserye-like.
Dark comedy is hard to pull off. It shows
sometimes in the clumsiness of the screenplay, hindi ganun kaswabe ang pag balance ng two genres. But it is still a noble effort.
- The cast is all powerhouse. No small role and everyone lures and grips us in this horrific tale about a small town experiencing election violence.
- The young actor, Will Ashley gives a compelling performance as Enzo, Teacher Emmy’s son. Unrepressed and his emotional scenes gut you.
- Sometimes a powerful star needs a career-defining moment outside of a popcorn flick. Marian Rivera took that moment and brought the film home. Even with the uneven treatment of the screenplay, she sold this story and brought all the grit in it.
She did not take on Emmy like a pristine heroine. She walks us through the different layers of Emily. The simple dreams. The numbness and weariness towards the cruel system. Her hilarious banter. Her suffering through threnodic notes. Her satisfying rage. She is riveting, relentless, and she hits every target she aims at.
Her performance brought this all home. She made the last scenes haunting as she gets lost in the voices of our abused history.
pati ikaw rin mapapaputangina.
So really: Though the tone of the film is all over the place, this message is timely and important.
Marian Rivera’s career best, imho … performance-wise. sometimes powerful actors need to relay powerful messages. She needs to do more movies.
