There is no liberty in addiction, there is no freedom in being victim to a craving that kills, the Tobacco and Vapes Bill takes an unprecedented step forwards to curb that damage and I urge colleagues throughout the House to support this Bill tonight. My speech:
A tenth of all cancer diagnoses in the UK are linked to socio-economic inequalities. Preventable risk factors such as smoking and obesity account for many of these.
🚭The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a vital step towards reducing inequalities linked to smoking, and protecting future generations from ill-health. This must be backed with sufficient and sustainable funding to ensure stop smoking support is accessible to all who need it. #Smokefree
Today's report into cancer services by Audit Wales is welcomed by Cancer Research UK, as it presents an opportunity to strengthen Welsh cancer services.
Despite the hard work of NHS staff, we know that challenges persist within cancer services, which is causing delays in diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis, and timely tests and treatment can make all the difference for some cancer patients. Early diagnosis saves lives, and for some patients with fast-growing tumours, we know delays can impact treatment options. We must reduce this impact by improving waiting times and outcomes; and we must strengthen our approach to realising these improvements.
The report was clear that the Welsh Government needs to strengthen the national approach to cancer, this is critical to turning around the current situation.
Cancer Research UK is committed to working with the Welsh Government to address today’s findings, so that we can help patients now and in the future.
