Last week, I spent some days reporting in Philly for @news21 . Our topic this year is the housing crisis in the U.S.
Here’s a sneak peak at some of the photos I captured while there. Stay tuned for the rest of the summer to see the rest of our reporting!
Protesters gathered at the legislature today to protest HB958, a sweeping elections bill that would make several controversial changes to elections law.

#SJGCOnTheMove 🐍 | Shoutout to Janelle Sears @JanelleIsmay on being selected for the Carnegie-Knight @news21 initiative, one of the most competitive journalism programs in the country!
This summer, she’s headed to ASU’s Walter Cronkite School @Cronkite_ASU to produce in-depth, multimedia investigations alongside the best j-students in the nation. A Rattler earned her spot.
That’s SJGC built different. We’re rooting for you, Janelle! 🧡💚

Today we recognize Black Press Day and Freedom of Information Day, honoring the legacy of Black journalists and publications that have informed, empowered, and uplifted communities for generations. 📝✍🏾
We sat down with Prof. Arionne Nettles, advisor of The FAMUAN, along with Janelle Sears, managing editor and senior journalism student, and Naji Rutherford, editor-in-chief and senior journalism student, to discuss the impact of one of Florida A&M University’s most historic student publications. 🧡🐍
Through their latest issue, “Since 1919,” The FAMUAN highlights important stories in Black history within the Tallahassee community while continuing to amplify student voices and activism. As part of the legacy of the Black Press, the publication plays a vital role in bridging the gap between students and the surrounding community while preparing the next generation of journalists.

📰 #FAMUSJGC senior journalism student Jonathan R.M. Charles is writing his own story and redefining what it means to be a next‑generation media innovator.
🌎 His investigative piece on the hidden health risks that follow extreme weather, published globally by @KFFHealthNews, @CBSNews and other platforms, is estimated to have reached 200 million views and counting and has been translated into other languages. His work is a product of his participation in the HBCU Science Journalism Fellowship, a component of the Knight Science Journalism Program at @MIT.
🎥 Jonathan also recently completed the FAMU CO.STARTERS business incubation program, positioning him to launch his own multi‑service media company that will bring his freelance writing, photography, videography, and artistic projects together under one umbrella.
His success is a testament to his tenacity and drive as a first‑generation student who overcame cultural and language barriers while being raised by a single mother who migrated from Haiti. 🇭🇹💚

🌟 We’re celebrating the future of political journalism for our #FridayFeature!
Broadcast journalism senior Janelle Sears recently completed the prestigious 2025 POLITICO Journalism Institute—continuing a powerful training pipeline that began more than 10 years ago with alumni like award-winning national and regional political reporter @NolanDMcCaskill.
⤵️
Like McCaskill, Sears is on pace to become the type of authoritative journalist who holds those in political power accountable. Her portfolio of political, community and policy journalism already includes producing and contributing to the 2024 election night special that aired on WANM-FM 90.5, and delivering real-time reporting and analysis for national and local political races as a news director and on-air talent.
⤵️
“My passion was rekindled for covering politics and issues that affect how we as communities and citizens navigate our everyday lives based on decisions that our government leaders make,” Sears said, reflecting on the experiential learning and support system she’s gained as a @politico cohort member and proud SJGC student.

Celebrating a week since my first official @politico byline on the Nightly! A product from my time at the Politico Journalism Institute and some writing during NU's finals week — we love the quarter system. https://t.co/0tCWDQNQTx
Just wrapped up my experience at @politico’s Journalism Institute! I learned SO much. From developing my beat, to expanding to sourcing, to learning how to manage a team of reporters, I know that I will come out of this experience as a better journalist!
