This is a bloody children’s day in Nigeria.

One unexpected side effect of raising children by actually talking to them like real people instead of tiny clueless accessories… is that they quickly become VERY aware of when adults start talking down to them.

My mom always treated me like my thoughts mattered.
She explained things instead of using “because I said so.”

The problem is that once kids grow up being respected, they start noticing every moment another adult tries to patronize or control them for no reason.

Apparently this led to me being described throughout school as:

“Undermining authority.”
“Disrupting the classroom environment.”
“Disobeying elder peers.”

And my personal favorite:

“Attempting to unionize the grade eleven gym class with intent to incite mutiny.”

Which honestly still sounds impressive to me.

Anyway, now I’m an adult who instinctively encourages kids to question nonsense instead of blindly obeying it.

My first husband put his hands on me during an argument exactly one time.

That was all it took.

I defended myself, and he ended up needing a trip to the emergency room.

While he was getting patched up, I was at home doing something much more productive.

I packed my clothes.

I packed the kids.

I packed anything that mattered.

Then I drove straight to my mother’s house.

The next step was filing for divorce.

There was no dramatic reconciliation. No long period of “trying to work it out.” No couples counseling. The marriage ended the moment he decided to get physical.

I have never believed in staying with someone who thinks they can put their hands on me and expect life to continue as usual.

Apparently he thought that incident was just part of an argument.
