Christianity should sound like, “my faith causes me to ask really challenging questions about myself,” not “my faith gives me all the right answers for how everyone else should live.”
When Jesus was asked "what does it mean to love my neighbor?" He gave an example of a man risking his life to give costly, material care and help to someone of a different race and of different religious beliefs. He concluded "Go and do likewise" (Luke 10:25-37)

“That area used to be nice.” “My family loved going there growing up, but it’s not safe now.” “I don’t feel comfortable going downtown anymore.” Every day I hear this from people living outside major cities. We’ve come to accept US decline as normal & natural, but it’s not.
Today Portland Rescue Mission serves men, women, and children in seven locations: Burnside Shelter, The Harbor, Shepherd’s Door, three community homes, and our Drive Away Hunger location.
City's Edge Community Church held a diaper drive for Shepherd's Door during the month of October, and they collected a total of 1,346 diapers (115lbs) and 1,592 wipes! We are so thankful for their generosity & kindness, these essentials will be such a blessing to those we serve.
The late Billy Graham 41 years ago, prophetically warned us:
"It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentals and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it."
Billy Graham, Parade Magazine, 1981.
Our goal at the Portland Rescue Mission is to transform lives. Some of the ways we do this include providing compassionate engagement and the services necessary to meet people where they are.
Let us #PrayTogether that the Lord might shake us from an individualism that excludes others, to awaken deaf hearts to the needs of their neighbour. Let us overcome the fear, the indifference that kills, the cynical disregard that condemns to death those on the fringes!
Pray for those who are going through our programs and that they don’t feel alone in this process and that they find a sense of community and a place of healing at the Mission.
Trusting relationships and a healthy community are necessary to successfully address the root causes of homelessness. That is why every service offered by Portland Rescue Mission is provided with a view to developing relationships and drawing people into a healthy community.

I don't think the New Testament tells Christians to "build God's kingdom." It instructs them to announce it and live as if it's a reality here and now.
Speaking strategically, it's a pretty enormous difference.
