The moment we moved in to save a big bull from a poaching attempt. This is the story behind the scene: During a routine patrol, our fixed-wing pilot spotted a very large bull in Tsavo West, about 45 years old, with a hulking stature & huge tusks.

Elephants of this size are often targeted by poachers. Realising he warranted a thorough check, our pilot circled around - & thank goodness he did. Just behind the bull’s front left leg was a tell-tale bump with a protrusion in the middle. It had all the signs of a poisoned arrow wound.

The SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit was on leave, but the Amboseli team was on call. Our caravan aircraft scooped up the KWS Vet, while our helicopter relocated the bull & slowly shepherded him to open ground. While ground teams got into position, the veterinarian darted the patient from the air — the opening shot of this video.
