Polyphemus’ scream in The Odyssey was one of the loudest scenes in modern cinema reaching 125 decibels
The loudest moment in all of modern cinema reached 128 decibels in *The Dark Knight*.
I often try to think back on the technical constraints that 80s game developers faced, both the hardware and software limitations of the era.
At the absolute top of games sits Elite. Think about it for a second, and really consider this: the core game code for the BBC Micro version was just 22 KB.
With that tiniest of footprints and room to work with, David Braben and Ian Bell created a universe containing eight galaxies, each with 256 star systems - over 2,000 planets in total.
Every single system had its own government type, economy, technology level, population, fluctuating commodity prices, and even unique texts (think wonderfully quirky and sometimes hilarious descriptions like a planet famous for its “carnivorous arts graduates”).
To put it in perspective: Elite was smaller than many modern text files or desktop icons, yet it delivered a massive, freely explorable multi-galaxy universe that felt genuinely limitless, especially for its time.
And it did all this while rendering 3D wireframe (!) ships, stations, and planets in real time on a 2 MHz 6502 processor.
This isn’t meant as a dig at today’s developers; they work with the tools and expectations they’re given. But when you look back at what some programmers achieved with such primitive resources, it genuinely breaks my nerd-brain. The sheer genius and creativity on display is nuts, and I will probably never fully grasp it.
Elite remains a masterpiece on every level. I played the Commodore 64 version back in the day, and even 40+ years later, it still feels like one of the most impressive programming achievements in gaming history.
Elite truly is elite.

@int_0 Y encima es que luego no te sirve de nada porque tienes que comprarte un hub a parte porque no eres capaz de conectarle un teclado un ratón y un usb a la vez 😭😭😭
