It’s Pink Shirt Day- a day to stand against bullying. It began because of homophobic bullying of a grade 9 student in Nova Scotia who was wearing pink. Sad to see Conservative MLA Brent Chapman try to hide its origins, minimizing the impact of homophobia on our kids.

Sending gratitude this morning to New Westminster Mayor and Council for their courageous action to support people at risk and save lives from poisoned illicit drugs in their community.

I spoke at their council meeting last night as they debated a 5-year response plan, including prevention, support and transition services AND the addition of an inhalation space inside an EXISTING health services site that provides supervised consumption.

‼️Important to note‼️

➡️ In 2024, New West’s rate of death from drug poisoning was 38.5 people per 100K — only slightly lower than the provincial average (39.7)
➡️ In 2024, it was the Local Health Area with the fourth highest rate of death in the Fraser Health region, behind (in order) Hope, Mission and Abbotsford.
➡️ New West’s rate of death was higher than neighbouring Surrey’s rate of 36.2/100K.

⚠️ MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: Most people SMOKE their drugs these days. Coroners’ data shows more than 67% of the people who died of drug poisoning last year were smoking their drugs. Which means in order to protect people, witness their use and reverse any ODs, we NEED supervised INHALATION spaces.
