The basic fact here is correct. Barnet Hill Academy does list a white hijab as part of the compulsory uniform for Muslim girls from Year 3.

But can we please have some consistency in this debate?

If the principle is that a state-funded school should not compel a child to wear religious dress, then say that, and apply it to every faith and to boys as well as girls.

There are state-funded Jewish schools where boys are required to wear a kippah, and faith schools with other religious dress requirements, including Sikh head coverings. Simon Marks Jewish Primary School says boys “must wear a kippah”, while Etz Chaim Jewish Primary expects boys to wear a kippah and tzitzit. Sikh-faith schools also specify religious head coverings for relevant Sikh pupils.

Barnet Council also says the hijab requirement is not compulsory for non-Muslim pupils, an important qualification missing from your post.

I am perfectly happy to debate whether any state-funded faith school should be able to make religious clothing compulsory. That is a legitimate question.

But the principle cannot suddenly become important only when the garment is a hijab, the faith is Islam and the child is a girl.

Either compulsory religious dress in state-funded education is the issue, or it isn't. Apply the same standard to everyone.
