First govt claimed they got that ludicrous £100bn to nationalise the water industry came from a think tank report. Then it claimed didn't because the idea was totally rubbish, transpired the report had been bought and paid for by water companies.
Then it claimed it had been calculated internally by civil servants at @DefraGovUK independent of everyone else. Then it didn't because the idea was also rubbish, transpired there was no independent Defra calculation it was all based on the same rubbish, totally makeup, totally factious @Ofwat's regulatory capital value, the one that also claims that @thameswater is worth a mind melting £21,008,425,000.
Blistering letter calling govt out for its deceit from the People's Commission.

The Chancellor’s decision to force through a third runway at Heathrow is a disgrace - and makes a mockery of the government's alleged climate commitments.
15,000 people to lose their homes and millions more exposed to pollution, all so global aviation giants and shareholders can make more profit.
Well done to @johnmcdonnellMP and all those who continue to campaign tirelessly against this disgraceful decision.
We remain firmly opposed to Heathrow expansion - and we will keep campaigning for a more sustainable world.
And that has always been the water company's backup plan, decimate even more rivers by taking even more water out of them during drought, why, because for them that was the cheapest option.
And here's the interesting thing, the @EnvAgency approved this as a strategy.
Defra Secretary of State for the Environment claims "Pollution in rivers in Scotland is worse than in England".
Err! No it's not. Do I feel an apology coming on?
The Ministerial Code by which all government ministers must comply can make interesting reading.
"It is of paramount importance that ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament, correcting any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity. Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation to the Prime Minister."
Lord Sikka reminds parliament that using the same formula that Ofwat had used to calculate the cost of nationalising the water industry "A £10,000 Robin Reliant bought in 1990 by Del Boy would now have a value of over £50,000".
Ofwat calculate that @thameswater is currently worth £21,008,425,000.
"Mapped: The summer holiday beaches flooded with sewage. There are 139 coastal locations at which sewage has been released over past two days."
The extraordinary world we now live in. Once upon a time in the run up to the school holidays newspapers would be full of the best tourist spots to visit, fish & chip shops, theme parks, theatres, museums, day trips with the kids, now it's beaches to avoid because they're covered in sh*t.

"£104bn of water industry investment will come from bill payers, environment secretary concedes."
And there we finally have it, there is no "£104 billion of private sector investment". Question is how long has the SoS known this and why has he kept repeating that myth?
Well done @SamCoatesSky for getting to the truth.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy: "These water companies say they're putting £billions in."
Feargal Sharkey: "They’ve taken away £84 billion of our money in dividends and created £74 billion of debt…We've been cheated.”
TODAY'S LESSON ON GETTING CAUGHT OUT AND AN APOLOGY TO @krishgm
Govt claimed yesterday that the £100 billion cost to nationalise the water industry is accurate and that the figures did not come from water companies.
Really? Let's see shall we.
On the 23rd July 2024 Baroness Hayman, Defra spokesperson in the House of Lords, told parliament that "Government have no plans to nationalise Thames Water. It would cost billions and take years". 👇
Lord Sikka @premnsikka promptly wrote to the good Baroness asking if she could "provide the details of that calculation".
Baroness Hayman replied on the 8th Aug 2024 stating "The cost of nationalisation was calculated in a report published by the Social Market Foundation titled ‘The cost of nationalising the water industry in England’. The report estimated the costs of nationalising water companies would be £90 billion," and that a copy could be found on the SMF's website.
And here it is, The Cost of Nationalising the Water Industry in England by the SMF. 👇
As SMF's website highlights the report was indeed "commissioned", bought and paid for by @AnglianWater, @stwater, @SouthWestWater and @unitedutilities the water companies.
1/3
To be clear about this the £100 billion to nationalise the water industry being branded about by govt this morning does indeed come from a think tank report commissioned, bought and paid for by; @AnglianWater, @stwater, @SouthWestWater and @unitedutilities
It also uses a calculation that tries to claim that @thameswater is worth an earth shattering, gobsmacking £21,008,425,000.00. Utterly delusional.
Why on earth ministers would want to be out there quoting any of this madness I've no idea.
