seeing the replies to this tweet reminds me why I’m grateful that the world didn’t leave the study of music, religion, and human psychology to Africans, it would have remained a mystery.

It is very important that we address this kind of claim because there’s someone out there who has almost finished deconstructing Christianity, that has realized that the Christian god is a genocidal monster, has realized that the Bible is not inerrant and contradicts itself, but is staying because of the music.

It’s important that this person knows that the reason they feel this way about gospel music has been studied very very well.

Gospel music uses things that predate Christianity.
1. Call and response
2. Chord progression (there’s even a joke that the black church makes about the “holy ghost chord”
3. Polyphonic and monophonic singing
4. Strong use of reverberations
5. Group singing
6. Clapping
7. Unresolved harmonic tension on musical instruments
8. Simple melodies

And these are present in other cultures that aren’t Christian.

People study it and have perfected it to the point where that same feeling called “collective effervescence” can be replicated in large stadiums, concerts, and raves.

Crazy thing is i have argued this with my own father a thousand times, they are always pissed my kids speak French and English but not igbo and my response is simple:

The world is progressing but Nigeria regresses on a daily, most people are running away from the country and 10 out of 10 times they will not use Igbo for anything in a white man’s land, speaking French and English or any globally recognised language will open far better doors for your kids than igbo or Yoruba will unless they have plans to become Igbo or Yoruba movies actors or artistry.

Now it doesn’t mean if i have the opportunity to teach them igbo i wouldn’t but i will prioritise a language that will help their lives in adulthood than anything else.
