John 14-Jesus and His disciples are eating their last supper together. Jesus has given them some deep spiritual truths that they don’t really understand.
He’s going to try to clarify things by giving His 6th I Am statement.

He starts by telling them not to be upset by the difficult things He has said. They need to trust Him and trust God. In vs 2 Jesus says His Father has a huge house with a lot of room and He is going there to get everything ready. When things are ready He will come back to get them. He says they should be confident and relaxed because they now know the way to the house.

But Thomas says, “No Lord, we don’t know the way!” In vs 6 Jesus says emphatically:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6 NLT

This is quite a statement because anyone who thinks Jesus is credible and honest must get this. In Chapter 13 Jesus said He would draw all men to God. Here He is saying He’s the only way to the Father. So that means that Heaven is totally INCLUSIVE—available to anyone. But also EXCLUSIVE—with only one way in and that is through Jesus.

And in vs 9 Jesus declares His divinity one more time by saying anyone who has seen Him has seen God the Father.

He finishes by telling the disciples (and us) that they can ask anything in His name and He will do it. This is a tremendous promise but we have to understand what it means. It doesn’t mean we can ask for whatever WE want and then attach Jesus’ name to it. It means we have to pray in the mindset and the name of Jesus. We have to submit our will to His will and pray for things that will honor and glorify Him. If we do that He promises to answer our prayers.

This message was very thought provoking for the disciples. And Jesus is just getting started!

John Chapter 13 opens with a story many of us are familiar with-Jesus washing His disciples’ feet before the Last Supper. But there are a few details that really highlight this story. Vs 1 says Jesus knew His time on earth was coming to an end. That is, Je knew He was about to die. But Jesus didn’t focus on himself. He still loved and served his group until the very end.

Vs 2 says He knew Judas was going to betray him. But that didn’t change Jesus’ heart or His actions toward Judas. Jesus had spoken to the disciples many times about the importance of having a servant’s heart. He said that loving and serving others would be the #1 characteristic of His followers. Now they were preparing to eat their Passover meal and there was no servant to wash their feet. This was a very dirty and menial task that would have customarily fallen to the youngest or lowest member on the totem pole of disciples. In light of what Jesus had been preaching to them, though, the senior leaders should have jumped at the opportunity to serve.
However, when none of the 12 step forward to wash feet, Jesus volunteers. The disciples are upset, and probably somewhat embarrassed. They can’t let their leader perform such a menial task. When Peter complains Jesus says “You don’t understand what I’m doing but someday you will.

After Jesus finishes washing everyone’s feet, including Judas’, Jesus explains to them what He just did. He said He was giving them an example of what godly leadership looks like. It means putting your group’s well-being and their needs above your own. It means serving rather than expecting to be served.

Jesus ends the discussion in vs 17 by saying now that you know these things you’ll be blessed if you DO them.

Three lessons we can learn from Jesus here:
1. As Christians we should get our joy out of serving others rather than being served.

2. We should treat everyone with love and respect, (as Jesus did with Judas) even people who might not be treating us that way.

3. From vs 17–knowing the Bible and knowing what we should do is not enough. Jesus says God will bless those who follow Jesus by DOING what He says.

1. America lacks a deep cultural history apart from Christianity. Denominationalism aside, Christianity - or at least Judeo-Christian theism - was the thing that held the US culture together. /1
