This is PTL.
I did $37k in revenue selling fidget spinners as a high school sophomore in 2017.
I started with $300 in a Chase checking account and kept almost none of it.
Refunds ate me alive because I was too scared to say no.
Here’s what I’d do differently 👇
7. tbh. I was 15 and stumbled into a trend weeks before it exploded. That’s not repeatable
What’s repeatable is all the boring stuff I skipped.
I began the journey to have financial freedom and time freedom. I was soooo close if I stuck to it.
Rather I chose a career in sales where i've made GOOD money but now its time to get back into the trenches rebuilding what I started from scratch.
6. Learn to kill things.
I couldn’t tell the difference between a product that needed more time and one that was dead. Set your budget and your kill threshold in advance.
5. Actually learn paid ads.
I was boosting Facebook posts and calling it marketing. Boosting is not advertising.
Between that and word of mouth from kids at school i honestly got lucky.
4. Treat refunds as a line item, not an emergency.
I refunded everyone instantly because confrontation terrified me. That’s most of my missing profit right there.
Looking back if i had a support email and understood peoples concerns less people would of refunded. Dont be a pussy. Ppl want to be heard.
3. Understand markup before you understand marketing.
I priced by what i felt like would make sense. If your margin can’t absorb refunds, ad spend, and fees, you don’t have a business bro youre gambling.
Know your numbers.
2. Learn what a supplier actually is.
I thought “supplier” meant whoever I bought from. It doesn’t. It’s a relationship pricing tiers, lead times, who eats the cost when a unit shows up broken.
I had none of that and was just looking for sexy products on ali express. Translation i was a dumbass
1. Get a job first.
$200-300/week doesn’t sound like a business, but it’s the difference between testing with money you can lose and testing with money you can’t. Every bad decision I made came from being scared of losing that $300.
Lesson learned: stop being a pussy
