I’m looking at the cost of hip implants. The actual implant and accessories. I’m trying to compare the price the UK vs Canada vs prices here in the USA, which I know varies by hospital. Smaller hospitals pay more.

I’m guessing Medicare allocates about $24b for the actual implant in its coding.

I’m trying to figure out what we could save taxpayers if we negotiated a single price for all hospitals.

We hear that hospitals can’t afford Medicare/caid pricing. This could be a place to allow small/rural hospitals to “catch up” on margin.

Just as importantly, it would make far more sense if we could save money on implants (knees, etc too) , more money would be available to doctors

Anyone have info they can share ?

GOOD NEWS 📰 James Kim, Principal Engineer at Samsung Foundry, announced that Samsung has successfully converted the AI5 chip's blueprint into a physical, manufacturable layout for their fabrication line 🔥

For those unfamiliar, a foundry tape-out like Samsung's is a bit different from a design tape-out like Tesla's.

While both terms refer to the same overarching project, they represent two sequential phases of handing off the design from the creator (Tesla) to the manufacturer (Samsung).

Tesla's design tape-out happened first, back in April 2026. This means Tesla's engineers finalized the logic, architecture, and overall digital blueprint of the AI5 chip before handing those electronic files over to Samsung. Think of this like an R&D chef finalizing a master recipe in a test kitchen and handing it off to a commercial food manufacturer.

Once Samsung received those files, they ran them through rigorous design rule checks to ensure compatibility with their cutting-edge 2nm node. They added specific structures required for manufacturability and locked in the final layout for the photomasks.

To continue the parallel, this is the equivalent of the manufacturing plant taking that recipe, scaling the measurements for massive industrial mixers, fine-tuning the instructions for their specific automated processing equipment, and locking in the exact standard operating procedure to mass-produce it on the factory floor.

With this milestone cleared, Samsung is now positioned to produce the first physical engineering samples, keeping the AI5 chip on schedule for high-volume manufacturing in 2027 🆒
