@aksocolofsky So, I would agree in that I think pumpkin as a sweet flavor falls flat for me in general. However, when I was a kid, my dad made the most delicious cheesecake that had pumpkin (no spice) and blackberries in the cheese part and an Oreo crust.. delish!

@gabrielkahane @Muzewest 3/3 The caveat to this would be that orchestras should continue to play works from the “canon” that don’t necessarily contribute to profits but are excellent and written by historically marginalized individuals in accordance with an organization’s EDIA mission.

@gabrielkahane @Muzewest 1/3 Getting rid of any piece from the canon that doesn’t generate profit for the orchestra is a great idea. Historically, many orchestras have relied on big concertos and blockbuster symphonies to make ends meet, and that still seems to be the case based on current programming.

@gabrielkahane @Muzewest 2/3 So often, I’ve attended performances by orchestras playing underwhelming works by lesser known composers from the canon and I get frustrated thinking that that’s a spot that could have been filled with an excellent work by a living composer!

@garrt On certain grant committees I’ve been on where all of the applications are excellent, we’ve taken the total funds and divided them evenly amongst everyone and then adjusted slightly based on actual budget/need.

@garrt @Liebermannmusic What a great list! In addition to these, check out Vivian Fung’s Quartets (her “pizzicato” is an ingenious study) and any of GF Haas’ as well! Brian Nabors also has a rather interesting one that was written for three different Ohio based quartets last year. Happy listening!

@aksocolofsky I’ve made pho with zucchini noodles instead of rice noodles and they actually have quite a nice consistency as long as you only blanche them. Don’t boil them… they will overcook.

@ttallon Not sure if you’ve checked this yet but it could be interesting to see if there are studies in business or psychology journals about hold music. I imagine at least some companies think about this rather seriously and have done a fair amount of research into what works for them.

@mykal91781731 Make your high point as high as you possibly can and find creative ways to avoid getting higher than that, before/after it happens. Ditto for the low points. Ditto for the most magical, memorable material you write.

@mykal91781731 Ohhh one more point! (Sorry I swear I’ll shut up after this.) listen to your favorite music with the perspective of the aforementioned ideas. Does the music you listen to follow these concepts. If not that’s ok, but whose music does which you love? What can you take from that?

@mykal91781731 (Last point continued) never be have too much of one thing and always try to figure out a single high point and a single low point for a piece. (Unless you have a really good reason to have multiple or neither!)
