Newcastle United have agreed to a £24.2m deal to secure Reims' rising star Ewen Jaouen as their first signing of the summer window. The Magpies successfully fought off fierce, late competition from two French clubs, as well as an inquiry from Real Madrid, to land the highly-rated youngster on a four-year contract, according to Lee Ryder.
While Jaouen is arriving from Ligue 2 with the understanding that he won't immediately step into the number-one spot, his decision to move to Tyneside was heavily influenced by Newcastle's vision for their squad rebuild and the promise of a platform to prove himself.
The "twist" in Newcastle's summer plans is that the goalkeeper department is undergoing a massive overhaul. Jaouen's arrival is just the first phase, as the club still intends to sign another senior goalkeeper to compete for the starting jersey.
This major restructuring comes on the heels of two high-profile departures, Aaron Ramsdale and John Ruddy.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe hinted that fans should expect a shift in the team's dynamics moving into the new campaign, particularly regarding the integration of younger talent.
"I think there are things within our game model that we would look to evolve. And certainly, there will be a part of the squad that will change—that always happens going into transfer windows... how we play changes every season anyway."
All good stuff! 🖤🤍
