Be a problem solver

I’ve had this 9x13 rug in stock for 6 months
$699 retail at Costco

I’ve had it listed a bunch of times from $250 - $350

I got tied of looking at it, so I listed it this week for $135

Had a nice lady reach out that wanted to buy it. She was going to have her son help her. I knew it was too much for them to handle.

This thing is a beast.

I offered to deliver it since she wasn’t far away. I dropped it off just now with my truck and my muscle 💪 (my son)

She gave me an extra $5 for delivery.

I’m thrilled to have it gone.

She was thrilled.

Net profit for me was still $110

Sometimes it’s not about maximizing profit.

It’s about moving inventory and making other people happy 😃

Up until my mom passed away this past February, she was flipping yarn.

My mom was the OG of the reselling game.
When I was young, she had several garage sales every year and I worked them all.

As soon as eBay launched, she opened an account. She couldn’t wait to sell on that platform.

She was 80 when she passed and for the the past number of years she would go out to Savers on a Tuesday and buy up whatever yarn they had. Tuesday was senior day, so she’d get an additional 10% off.

She would then list the yarn individually on eBay.

Buy for .50
Sell for $3.00

She didn’t need the money.
This kept her active.
Kept her mind sharp.
Got her out of the house.

Most of our conversations started with her telling me of an eBay buyer 😅 experience.

Now you wonder why I love reselling?
It’s engrained in my DNA.

She showed my the way.
Now I’m showing my kids.

Why did I start Costco resale business when I didn’t need to?

I’m showing my kids what’s possible.

I’m also showing you what’s possible.

The W2 isn’t the only way in life.
You can own your own time.
You can go to every one of your kids activities.

For 25 years, I’ve run a multimillion dollar plastic resin distribution business.
I don’t need to sell rugs.

I’m proving to you and to my kids that you can be financially successful and own your time.
These 2 are not mutually exclusive.

Consumer reselling is one of the easiest paths to scale.

Stop fighting with your boss because Sally has the same week off that you want.

Take 7 vacations/year instead.

A year out of my control…..

1. My mom passed in Feb
2. March ~ Had to move out of my warehouse because the building went up for sale
3. Traveled to my hometown 3 times taking care of mom’s estate
4. My dog passed away in July
5. June~ Sold my mom’s house only to have the buyers back out. (Just sold it again)
6. Last Friday, I got bit by fire ants and had an anaphylactic reaction and ended up in the hospital.
6. Just found out the smell in my office that’s been going on for 3 months is chemicals from the company on the other side of my wall. Landlord unresponsive, so I now need to move out.

It’s been rough, but my head is still up.

Forward we go, learning along the way.

We’re all struggling at some level

Don’t ever judge anyone because you definitely don’t know their whole story.

Getting to work with my son is something I never take for granted.

My son was an accounting major, did one internship and told me he thinks he made a mistake.
He didn’t want to sit behind a desk all day looking at numbers.

In 2021, he started working part time for me, after I asked him if he wanted to see if the plastic resin business was of interest.

5 year later, at 27 years old, he’s got a book of clients and handles our logistics.

I didn’t hand him anything.

He was 100% commission for the first 3 years.

Today, he makes a small salary for handling logistics and is still 100% commission on the sales side.

He makes 40% of the net profit on his deals.

Don’t hand your kids anything.

Teach them how to work hard.

I had a phone call today with the head of US distribution for a major plastic resin producer in Europe.
He wants to add my company, Nickel City Polymers, as their Southeast distributor in the US.
I said yes, of course.

He messaged me because he saw a video of me cooking a steak on my Blackstone on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is not dead.
You're doing it wrong.
Stop posting boring business articles.
No one is reading them, and no one finds you interesting.

I’m 55 years old. I own a multimillion dollar plastic resin distribution and resale business which I started in 2003.

I started another business selling rugs and home goods. Why? I want to show my kids what is possible.

I also want to inspire others with my actions and share them on this platform. I’m teaching my kids and others the value of time.

Time should be our #1 priority.

If you work a 9-5, you are strapped to a desk, punching a clock, rushing to be there on time, negotiating for PTO, putting in your vacation time early to get the week you want. Just typing this gives me anxiety. I lived that life for 6 years in my late 20’s and one day, I just left.

Gave my 2 weeks notice and had no idea what I was going to do. The day I walked out that door, my uncommon life started.

For the past 23 years, I do what I want, when I want, for however long I want. I’ve attended every one of my kids games, doctors appointments, and school functions. I take 7 vacations/year and have the freedom to play golf anytime I want. People often asked me if I had a job 😏 when I’d be the only parent at my son’s college baseball game at 2pm on a Wednesday in the middle of Pennsylvania.

Does this mean I don’t work hard? Quite the opposite. Technology has given me the ability to work anywhere.

I’ve made deals on the beach, the golf course, at Disneyworld, at a dentist appointment, everywhere.

Time has become my obsession and I want it to become yours.

By the way, I run my plastic business with 3 employees. Myself, my wife and my son. You don’t need to scale to be successful. I’ve tried it. It sucks to manage drama everyday. We run lean and mean. Same for the new business.

Our time is always the priority. If an idea interferes with my freedom, it doesn’t happen. Just my philosophy, you can disagree and have different priorities, but we only have so much time left on this earth and you really don’t NEED to feel strapped to a 9-5. You just need to take action.

No action means no progress. It’s means nothing changes. You don’t need a 3000 sq. ft. house, 2 car payments, a Rolex, designer clothes, etc.

Scale back and start valuing time.

I’ll be teaching you how to live an uncommon life like me because I believe in Karma.

We just made $8000 while I was cutting the grass and while my son (@jaredwelnowskii) is in Prague.

This $8000 is the minimum we will make on this deal. We know we have a sell price to fall back on.
Now we will go for the home run.
If we get close to market value we could be upwards of $50,000 profit.

Hoping to fall somewhere in the middle.

Our network is our money maker.

The ability to work anywhere at anytime will never get old.
