vincent van gogh sold one painting in his life. four hundred francs. two years after he died the same painting sold for thirty thousand francs. seventy-five times what he ever earned. since then his work has crossed billions of dollars in market value. he saw none of it.

march 30 1853, netherlands. he tried to become a pastor and was rejected. he tried to become an art dealer and was fired. he started painting at age 27 in 1881. for the next nine years he produced 860 oil paintings. nobody bought them.

the one person who kept him alive was his younger brother theo, who worked as an art dealer in paris and sent vincent money every month. they exchanged 658 letters. theo's wife johanna would later be the one who made vincent's name a household name.

december 23 1888, arles. he was sharing a yellow house with paul gauguin for two months. they fought. that night vincent cut off the lower half of his left ear with a razor. he wrapped it in newspaper and walked it down the street to a brothel and gave it to a woman named rachel. he was found unconscious in his bed the next morning covered in blood.

march 1890, brussels. an exhibition called les vingt. anna boch, a belgian painter, bought "the red vineyard" for four hundred francs. it was the first and last painting vincent would ever sell in life. he wrote theo afterwards saying he felt embarrassed taking the full price, that she should have received a friend's discount.

may 1890. he checked himself out of the saint-rémy asylum where he had spent a year and moved to auvers-sur-oise. between then and his death he produced 75 more paintings in 70 days.

july 27 1890. wheatfield with crows. he walked into a field with a revolver and shot himself in the chest. he did not die immediately. he walked back to the inn where he was staying, climbed the stairs, lay down in bed, and lived 30 hours longer. theo arrived in time to hold his hand.

he was 37.

theo died six months later, age 33, from neurosyphilis. his last words were about his brother. theo's wife johanna inherited the paintings and the 658 letters. she devoted the rest of her life to making sure the world remembered who vincent was. she translated the letters, organized exhibitions, sold paintings strategically to museums.

1990. portrait of dr gachet sold at auction for 82.5 million dollars.
2022. the original "the red vineyard" is now at the pushkin museum in moscow. the same painting that earned vincent his one sale.

the only person to ever buy a painting from vincent van gogh paid less than rent. he died believing he had failed.
