On July 30, 2022, a violent altercation occurred on the Apple River near Somerset, Wisconsin, resulting in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman and injuries to four others. Nicolae Miu, a 54-year-old engineer from Minnesota, was convicted for these offenses and subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Nicolae Miu was tubing with his wife and friends when he separated from the group to search for a lost cell phone using snorkeling gear. While searching, he approached a group of young individuals, leading to a confrontation. Members of the group accused Miu of inappropriate behavior, which escalated tensions. Miu claimed he was surrounded and felt threatened, leading him to use a knife he carried for tubing purposes. He fatally stabbed Isaac Schuman and injured four others: Alexander Martin, Dante Carlson, Anthony Carlson, and Ryhley Mattison. Additionally, Madison Coen was assaulted during the incident.
Miu was arrested later that day and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and multiple counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. During the trial, which began on April 1, 2024, Miu testified in his defense, asserting that he acted in self-defense due to feeling threatened by the group. However, the prosecution presented video evidence and witness testimonies suggesting that Miu had opportunities to de-escalate the situation but chose not to. On April 11, 2024, the jury found Miu guilty of first-degree reckless homicide, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of battery.
On July 31, 2024, Miu was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with six years of extended supervision upon release. The sentences for each count were ordered to run concurrently. Miu received credit for 732 days already served. Judge Michael Waterman acknowledged Miu’s lack of prior criminal history and expressed that, despite the severity of the crimes, Miu did not pose an imminent risk to the public.
During the sentencing hearing, family members of Isaac Schuman and the other victims delivered emotional statements. Schuman’s mother, Alina Hernandez, described her profound grief and requested the maximum sentence for Miu. Other victims detailed the physical and psychological trauma they endured, emphasizing the lasting impact of the incident on their lives.
The Apple River stabbing incident underscores the tragic consequences of escalated confrontations and the importance of de-escalation in conflict situations. The legal proceedings concluded with a conviction and sentencing that aimed to balance justice for the victims with consideration of the defendant’s background.
This video I just saw, is disturbing and will definitely make you angry😡
This isn’t just heartbreaking, it’s absolutely enraging. A 15-year-old girl, Layla from Mexico, thought she was meeting up with her closest friends for something fun. Girls she trusted. Girls she felt safe with. Instead, they set her up and murdered her in cold blood. Strangled her over jealousy… over a boy. Let that sink in. One of them was her so-called “best friend.”
And somehow, the system turns around and releases them, They walk free because they’re minors? How does that make any sense? How do you commit something this calculated, this cruel, and face little to no real consequences?
Her mother is shattered, begging for justice while holding her daughter’s photo and what does she get in return? Excuses. Loopholes. A system that seems more concerned with protecting killers than delivering justice for victims.
This isn’t just one tragedy. It’s a pattern. We keep seeing cases like this, in Mexico, in Argentina, everywhere and nothing changes. At what point do we stop pretending this is “kids being kids” and start calling it exactly what it is: evil😡
Enough is enough. If you’re old enough to plan and carry out a murder, you’re old enough to face real consequences. No more slaps on the wrist. No more loopholes.
Parents, wake up. Talk to your kids. Not everyone who smiles in their face is their friend.
Layla deserved to live. Her mother deserves justice. And right now, she’s getting neither.
