In their youth, figures like Hou Hsiao-hsien and Chu Tien-wen were capable of utilizing System 2 thinking to deconstruct the authoritarianism of the KMT. This was possible because they were in their prime, and the KMT’s oppression directly stifled their creative desires.

Objectively, this shift represents a form of intellectual laziness or cognitive regression. They have ceased to be intellectuals in pursuit of truth and have instead become believers guarding an illusion.
