Can you please enlighten us on why 127 cuts were recommended for the film Panjab '95?

The same film, now renamed ‘Satluj’, has been taken down from an OTT platform in less than two days. The CBFC has no jurisdiction over OTT platforms or international releases.

Panjab '95 tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a man who exposed documented human rights abuses and paid for it with his life. If a film based on documented facts cannot be seen by Indian audiences, then the public deserves to know why.

This sends a very direct message to filmmakers and production companies: if you're paying homage to a great personality from a minority community, you'll have to face the CBFC.

Journalists should be asking the people running this censor board some hard questions. Why are some politically insensitive films able to pass with ease while others spend years in limbo?

How does it feel to feast on four years of a director's career?

In Nehru's India, this would have been litigated in court. If filmmakers cannot tell the stories of people who stood up for justice without years of obstruction, what kind of cinema are we encouraging them to make?

My bhua's pind is Chabhal, where SSP Ajit Singh Sandhu, the character Sugga in the film Satluj, was in charge of the thana. The fear he instilled in that whole pind and nearby pinds cannot be described. Dad used to tell me that when kids reached 15 or 16, they were told not to leave the house, even to go to the market. Most were sent to out-of-state relatives because he would just have his staff pick them up and conduct fake encounters on a weekly basis. Sri Akal Takht Sahib summoned all Sikh MLAs and Cabinet Ministers of Panjab to share the Sikh body’s apprehensions with the state’s new anti-sacrilege law. Many of the MLAs accepted in front of the Jathedar they had not even read the law before passing it in the Assembly. The Takht opposed ‘state interference’ in Sikh affairs and gave the govt a one-month ultimatum to make certain amends in the law.

Today marks the 432nd Parkash Purb of the sixth Sikh master, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji — the warrior-Sovereign who founded Sri Akal Takht Sahib, throne of the Eternal; conceptualised Miri & Piri (spiritual & temporal authority); challenged tyranny & freed political prisoners.

As a journalist, I have covered Sikh affairs, Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Punjab’s major political and religious developments for more than two and a half decades.
Today, for the first time, I witnessed @INCIndia legislators being heard collectively at Sri Akal Takht Sahib with such patience, dignity and respect. Leader of the Opposition @Partap_Sbajwa and other Congress MLAs were given ample time to explain their position on the anti-sacrilege legislation.
Considering the Congress party’s historically difficult relationship with Sikh institutions, this was a significant moment.
To me, it reflected the impartial stature of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and opened space for dialogue, accountability and reconciliation.
