@mikemearls Hmm, maybe in 5e.2014. In 5e.2024, backgrounds were stripped of everything that made them backgrounds, instead becoming overly constrained grab bags of purely mechanical features. Where's the fun in that? With this, more than anything else in '24, I fail to see the design intent.
I had the pleasure of bumping into both @JeremyECrawford and @ChrisPerkinsDnD at Gen Con last year. Both are consummate gentlemen. I greatly credit Jeremy's eloquence on the subject for fueling my interest in the game. It's the end of an era. Best of luck to both of you!
@mikemearls@JeremyECrawford I agree with you. The path from fan to player to GM to creator/designer is characterized by increasing creativity. GMs, designers, games, and digital platforms should be empowering their players/users to build and play their games their way. Rule of cool > RAW. Creation = Play.
@mikemearls IMHO many designers lose sight of the forest (players/UX) for the trees (IP/rules). Even the sagacious @JeremyECrawford has to look up the rules all the time. Baldur's Gate 3 rewrote much of 5e's gameplay because it isn't fun. WotC chose not to similarly improve 5e 2024. Hubris?
@elonmusk@krassenstein Even users on the left—I am one of them—don't get 'fair and balanced' news on X. Everyone gets a feed optimized to display content consistent with what we 'like'. Consider an option to step outside of the filter bubble or to try on different perspectives/lenses.
World Tree is a collaboration between leading #TTRPG publishers and the team that brought you D&D Beyond.
Together we've learned what works, what doesn't work, what people love, and what they dislike.
World Tree is our opportunity to do it right and do it for the whole community.
@epicdndmemes I hoped it was purposeful misdirection when it came out in Unearthed Arcana. In my opinion, it's a big step backwards. 'Heritage' is better, but I prefer 'lineage'.
We want you to know who we are, what drives us, and why you’ll love adventuring with World Tree—that's why we've crafted our mission, vision, and values.
